Notts Sport Multi-use Games Area reference sites

This document provides information on multiple synthetic multi-use games areas (MUGAs) that were installed at various locations in the UK. It describes the site addresses, clients, dimensions, playing surface systems, contractors, costs and sporting applications for each MUGA project. The playing surface systems generally included a stone base, sand envelope system, VHAF and NottsSward sand-filled synthetic grass. The MUGAs supported a variety of sports including football, netball, tennis and hockey.

The existing Sand Envelope System® and dynamic base construction has proven to last the life of 2 carpets at sites throughout the UK providing customers with a system that can be reused rather than replaced and reducing the costs of refurbishment in comparison to other performance layers and shock-pads. The council required a design that would be robust enough to last in an open access /un-supervised environment but that would meet football performance. The VHAF® NottsSward® surface had been trialled at another smaller site in Portsmouth and had stood up to the wear and vandalism, and therefore, was the preferred surface here.

The pitch is located within the centre of the Hamilton Park Racecourse and the design was tailored to ensure that there was minimal impact on the racecourse and vistas for spectators and cameras. This replacement pitch was designed to meet the high quality hockey the College wished to offer whilst offering performance and durability for football and other sports. The School had no “all weather” sports areas and were desperate for a facility of this type to maximise the ability to deliver sport and recreation as part of the curriculum.
