Design Considerations and Workarounds
When nurse informaticists are tasked with identifying the most appropriate technology to meet a specific need within a health care setting, there are many questions that must be asked.
Consider the following scenario to address assignment
Riverdale Hospital has come under recent scrutiny for their medication procedures. Many times, paper medication records are not up to date or have been misplaced. As a result, patients have increasingly received their medications at the wrong times. Though each nurse is performing to the best of his or her ability, the fast pace of the hospital has caused some to ineffectively manage patient records.
The lead nurse informaticist, Nancy, has decided that a bar code scanner could help streamline the documentation process while also improving patient quality and safety. Nancy knows that when selecting a bar coding system she must not only examine the hardware and software of the system but also consider the various human factors that can positively and/or negatively affect the outcomes of the system implementation. As such, Nancy asked three of the most reputable bar code vendors to bring sample systems to Riverdale Hospital.
In evaluating each system, Nancy role plays the process of scanning a patient’s bar code. She rolls the coding cart into the room to begin her mock demonstration. First, Nancy scans her identification card to gain access to the medication screen. To scan the patient’s bar code identifier, Nancy then pulls the medication cart to the patient so that the attached scanner reaches the bar code on the patient’s wristband. When the scan is complete, the computer displays a screen that houses the patient’s personal information. By navigating the screens, Nancy finds that she can use the computer to track medication administration. In addition, Nancy is able to view applicable vitals and medication history. As Nancy continues to examine this system, she reflects on the other hardware and software facets she should be sure to consider. She also thinks about how human factors will affect this and other vendor systems.
In this Assignment, you consider how hardware, software, and human factors can impact the implementation of an informatics system.

The Application of Data to Problem-Solving
In the modern era, there are few professions that do not to some extent rely on data. Stockbrokers rely on market data to advise clients on financial matters. Meteorologists rely on weather data to forecast weather conditions, while realtors rely on data to advise on the purchase and sale of property. In these and other cases, data not only helps solve problems, but adds to the practitioner’s and the discipline’s body of knowledge.
Of course, the nursing profession also relies heavily on data. The field of nursing informatics aims to make sure nurses have access to the appropriate date to solve healthcare problems, make decisions in the interest of patients, and add to knowledge.
In this Discussion, you will consider a scenario that would benefit from access to data and how such access could facilitate both problem-solving and knowledge formation.
To Prepare:
Reflect on the concepts of informatics and knowledge work as presented in the Resources.
Consider a hypothetical scenario based on your own healthcare practice or organization that would require or benefit from the access/collection and application of data. Your scenario may involve a patient, staff, or management problem or gap.
By Day 3 of Week 1
Post
a description of the focus of your scenario. Describe the data that could be used and how the data might be collected and accessed. What knowledge might be derived from that data? How would a nurse leader use clinical reasoning and judgment in the formation of knowledge from this experience?

Exercises in Measurement and validity
For this assignment, you will be working through questions regarding measurement and validity.. Your answers should be written in complete sentences. Some of the answers may require you to show your work.
1. You have just started a new diet program. To mark your progress, you start weighing yourself three times a day. You also notice that each time you weigh yourself in a given day, the number of pounds is different. Based on the rules regarding the scales of measurement, why is it wrong to weigh yourself more than once a day?
2. Your hospital administration has received several phone complaints from patients about rude behavior from registration staff and long wait times to register in both the Dermatology and Audiology Outpatient Clinics. A decision is made to send a patient satisfaction survey to all Outpatient Clinic patients to determine overall patient satisfaction in the hospital’s Clinic setting. The survey developed uses this type of scoring: 1 = strongly disagree and 5 = strongly agree. What type of scale of measurement is this?
3. Your hospital wants to study patients readmitted within 30-days. What measures (e.g. Medicare patients only) would you recommend be included in the study (identify at least 3)? Where would you locate the data elements (e.g. admission records)?
4. Your hospital’s Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee undertook a quality review of Medication forms from discharges in the first quarter of the year and identified the errors by 5 general categories and then calculated the percentage of the total errors by category. The results were: Dosage Form 6%, Name confusion 13%, Communication 19%, Labeling 20%, and Human Factors 42%. The movie that I watched for this week, Constantine, would almost certainly have been censored. This movie explores some of things in religion that most God fearing individuals would rather not. The idea that an evil would threaten the very existence of mankind. Not to mention the way some of the demons and victims were killed or eliminated. The Motion Picture Production Code of 1930 or The Hays Code, established guidelines for movie producers. The following is a short explanation of his code:
The Code was based on three general principles: No picture shall be produced that will lower the moral standards of those who see it. Hence the sympathy of the audience should never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil or sin. Correct standards of life, subject only to the requirements of drama and entertainment, shall be presented. Law, natural or human, shall not be ridiculed, nor shall sympathy be created for its violation. These were developed in a series of rules grouped under the self-explanatory headings Crimes Against The Law, Sex, Vulgarity, Obscenity, Profanity, Costume, Dances (i.e. suggestive movements), Religion, Locations (i.e. the bedroom), National Feelings, Titles and "Repellent Subjects" (extremely graphic violence) (BFI. n.d.)

In the field of health informatics, particular historical events help inform the management of health information:
1. The 1950s saw the early development of health informatics through cybernetics and information processing. This entailed professionals from various fields, such as clinical documentation and epidemiology.
2. The 1960 to 2000 period saw the evolution of data analysis and computing. Health information management was facilitated through the development of electronic medical records systems. Such systems are vital for health information management since they provide real-time patient-centered records to authorized users (Collen & Ball, 2018).
3. There is the period from 2000 to the present where stakeholders have moved to digitize healthcare processes such as information sharing, record keeping, and care coordination.
Guidelines
There are several guidelines for technology use that Feather fall could implement in health information management. For starters, the medical staff should get the relevant training required to utilize the technology to facilitate the effective acquisition, analysis, and protection of patient information. Training ensures they can tackle any challenges they may encounter to collect accurate data and analyze it in a way that benefits patients. Additionally, the medical staff needs to ensure that the devices they use are beyond the reach of unauthorized individuals. This is crucial in promoting patient confidentiality/privacy and securing pertinent data does not get into the wrong hands (Ozair et al., 2018). Finally, medical practitioners should provide feedback about their experiences to ensure that the technology they use can be improved in the future.
Standard Technologies
There are various standard technologies used in health information management. For starters, concerning record keeping, some of the traditional EHR technologies include Epic Systems and Meditech. Many institutions use these two systems due to their departmental functionality and extensive usability. RingCentral Video is a standard technology for videoconferencing that facilitates open communication and interactive communications among healthcare providers. Different practitioners can share information and work together in real-time to facilitate effective patient care. Finally, there is the use of Vendor-Neutral Archives (VNAs) and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) when it comes to processing and storing the medical images of patients (Sirota-Cohen et al., 2019).
How Roles at Feather fall Interact with Technology
The pertinent roles at Feather fall would interact with technology through a simple but effective communication system that ensures all users can get the most out of the health management technologies on offer. Currently, the staff members have poor training and no means of effe ...
One significant industrial hygiene related situation that occurred i.docxgabriellabre8fr
One significant industrial hygiene related situation that occurred in the not too distant past involved workers at a microwave popcorn facility who were diagnosed with a debilitating lung disease known as bronchiolitis obliterans. The industrial hygiene and public health community was somewhat taken off guard when a number of workers suffered severe, irreparable lung dysfunction at a Missouri popcorn plant. After all, these folks didn’t work with what had traditionally been identified as highly hazardous substances. They worked with food products and butter flavorings. In the early 2000s this was considered an emerging issue. A lot has been learned about butter flavorings over the years. However, the substance identified as Diacetyl and similar products used as food flavorings continue to be a significant issue and are identified as primary culprits behind several clusters of bronchiolitis obliterans tied to workers at food processing facilities that use butter flavoring.
Using APA format, please provide a minimum of a 2 page article review in which you will: Identify the primary issue and why it is still a problem in industry more than a decade after the hazard was identified? Discuss progress with establishing exposure limits. Discuss steps that food industry companies like microwave popcorn manufacturers can take to limit employee exposure, making sure to consider the hierarchy of controls in your assessment. What is the role of the industrial hygienist in helping to control exposure?

Milestone 1

Activity Context
This discussion helps you develop the skills to master the following course competency:
Evaluate the leader's responsibility to prepare the self for work in a competitive, complex, and diverse workplace.
Activity Instructions
This discussion will help you build skill in evaluating the interdependent variables that impact the value and trajectory of global leadership development programs in terms of their effectiveness in fostering deep self-awareness and growth as well as cultural intelligence and nonlinear systems thinking. Part of the evaluation will involve the sets of interdependent variables that are built into the paths that enhance skills for global leaders.
Revisit PepsiCo's leadership development program, and evaluate its capacity to foster the "leading from behind" skills ("Where Will We Find Tomorrow's Leaders?," 2008, p. 126). Look specifically at variables such as cultural intelligence, nonlinear systems thinking, self-awareness, and growth. Include answers to the following questions in your post:
Does the PepsiCo program challenge existing assumptions about what leaders should be in such a way as to empower a more self-directed and self-selected leadership development trajectory or process?
Does the program support an outside-in or an inside-out focus (imposed or self-generated)?
Does the PepsiCo program foster the capacity to support the personal growth of self and others in a nonlinear, multi-minded system?
Does the program develop cultural intelligence?
Response Guidelines
Respond to two of your peers. In your responses to your colleagues, analyze the implications of the PepsiCo program in regard to whether the assessment of the variables presented by colleagues actually develops the self as you would wish the self to evolve as a global leader.

One of the very first cases that caught Freud’s attention when he wa.docxgabriellabre8fr
One of the very first cases that caught Freud’s attention when he was starting to develop his psychoanalytic theory was that of Anna O, a patient of fellow psychiatrist Josef Breuer. Although Freud did not directly treat her, he did thoroughly analyze her case as he was fascinated by the fact that her hysteria was “cured” by Breuer. It is her case that he believes was the beginning of the psychoanalytic approach.
Through your analysis of this case, you will not only look deeper into Freud’s psychoanalytic theory but also see how Jung’s neo-psychoanalytic theory compares and contrasts with Freud’s theory.
Review the following:
The Case of Anna O.
One of the first cases that inspired Freud in the development of what would eventually become the Psychoanalytic Theory was the case of Anna O. Anna O. was actually a patient of one of Freud’s colleagues Josef Breuer. Using Breuer’s case notes, Freud was able to analyze the key facts of Anna O’s case.
Anna O. first developed her symptoms while she was taking care of her very ill father with whom she was extremely close. Some of her initial symptoms were loss of appetite to the extent of not eating, weakness, anemia, and development a severe nervous cough. Eventually she developed a severe optic headache and lost the ability to move her head, which then progressed into paralysis of both arms. Her symptoms were not solely physical as she would vacillate between a normal, mental state and a manic-type state in which she would become extremely agitated. There was even a notation of a time for which she hallucinated that the ribbons in her hair were snakes.
Toward the end of her father’s life she stopped speaking her native language of German and instead only spoke in English. A little over a year after she began taking care of her father he passed away. After his passing her symptoms grew to affect her vision, a loss of ability to focus her attention, more extreme hallucinations, and a number of suicidal attempts (Hurst, 1982).
Both Freud and Jung would acknowledge that unconscious processes are at work in this woman's problems. However, they would come to different conclusions about the origin of these problems and the method by which she should be treated.
Research Freud’s and Jung’s theories of personality using your textbook, the Internet, and the Argosy University online library resources. Based on your research, respond to the following:
Compare and contrast Freud's view of the unconscious with Jung's view and apply this case example in your explanations.
On what specific points would they agree and disagree regarding the purpose and manifestation of the unconscious in the case of Anna?
How might they each approach the treatment of Anna? What might be those specific interventions? How might Anna experience these interventions considering her history?

One of the most contentious issues that divide conservatives and lib.docxgabriellabre8fr
One of the most contentious issues that divide conservatives and liberals is the size of government. Conservatives often argue that government has bloated beyond any reasonable extent, while liberals frequently see a larger government role in society — thus requiring a larger federal bureaucracy. Do you believe that the size of the federal bureaucracy has kept pace with the increasing demands on government? Would Americans trade lower taxes for a much smaller federal government, even if there was a decrease in public services for ordinary citizens? Are claims that the United States is burdened by "so-called" big government mistaken, or should government be enlarged to meet the expanding needs of a growing nation? Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings.

One of the most common questions the general public asks about intim.docxgabriellabre8fr
One of the most common questions the general public asks about intimate partner violence (ipv) is "Why does she stay?" Several important factors need to be mentioned in this regard. First, women do leave abusive relationships. In fact, they leave and return multiple times. (
Be wary of any resource that quotes an exact or average number of times that survivors leave. The reality is that we really don't know, other than it appears to be multiple times for many women
.)
Second, when someone asks "Why doesn't she leave?" they are making the very dangerous mistake of assuming that to leave a violent relationship will cause the violence to cease. According to the American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force on Violence and the Family (1996), "Many people still believe that the problem of battering can be solved by separation, but the risk of serious or lethal violence may actually increase after separation" (39).
The greatest risk for serious injury or death from violence is at the point of separation or at the time when the decision to separate is made. Data from a U.S. Department of Justice national Crime Victimization Survey indicates that among women who were victims of violent assault by an intimate partner, women reported that the offender was an ex-spouse almost half as many times as they reported that the offender was a spouse" (American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force on Violence and the Family, 1996, p. 39). The reality is that for a large number of survivors to leave a violent relationship does not make things better, rather, it makes things worse. Please see the attached handout,
Examples of the Types of Violence Occuring At Separation
(linked below)
.
A third factor to be considered in this discussion involves the very nature of the question "Why does she stay?" Very rarely do people ask, "Why does he batter?, or "Why doesn't he leave?" Many grassroots activists and feminists believe that to ask "Why does she stay?" is actually victim blaming and fails to hold the abuser accountable for his behavior.
In
Module 1
, Lawrence Green and his colleagues identified three types of factors that can affect the help-seeking process by either encouraging or discouraging action:
Predisposing factors
– attitudes, perceptions, or beliefs that either facilitate or hinder personal motivation to act
Enabling factors
--factors that either help by their presence or hinder by their absence like the ability to obtain necessary assistance (limited facilities, inadequate personnel, lack of funds)
Reinforcing factors
– characteristics of services or attitudes of caregivers that assist in decision-making like the feedback or attention received.
Linked below is the handout
Barriers to Leaving
which outlines numerous factors or "barriers" that should be considered when examining the difficulties in leaving an abusive relationship. This list of barriers can be combined with Green’s et. al. work to help explain the cha.

Design Considerations and Workarounds
When nurse informaticists are tasked with identifying the most
appropriate technology to meet a specific need within a health
care setting, there are many questions that must be asked.
Consider the following scenario to address assignment
Riverdale Hospital has come under recent scrutiny for their
medication procedures. Many times, paper medication records
are not up to date or have been misplaced. As a result, patients
have increasingly received their medications at the wrong times.
Though each nurse is performing to the best of his or her
ability, the fast pace of the hospital has caused some to
ineffectively manage patient records.
The lead nurse informaticist, Nancy, has decided that a bar code
scanner could help streamline the documentation process while
also improving patient quality and safety. Nancy knows that
when selecting a bar coding system she must not only examine
the hardware and software of the system but also consider the
various human factors that can positively and/or negatively
affect the outcomes of the system implementation. As such,
Nancy asked three of the most reputable bar code vendors to
bring sample systems to Riverdale Hospital.
In evaluating each system, Nancy role plays the process of
scanning a patient’s bar code. She rolls the coding cart into the
room to begin her mock demonstration. First, Nancy scans her
identification card to gain access to the medication screen. To
2. scan the patient’s bar code identifier, Nancy then pulls the
medication cart to the patient so that the attached scanner
reaches the bar code on the patient’s wristband. When the scan
is complete, the computer displays a screen that houses the
patient’s personal information. By navigating the screens,
Nancy finds that she can use the computer to track medication
administration. In addition, Nancy is able to view applicable
vitals and medication history. As Nancy continues to examine
this system, she reflects on the other hardware and software
facets she should be sure to consider. She also thinks about how
human factors will affect this and other vendor systems.
In this Assignment, you consider how hardware, software, and
human factors can impact the implementation of an informatics
system.
·
Review Chapter 30, “The Role of Technology in the
Medication-Use Process,” in the course text,
Essentials of Nursing Informatics
. When examining computerized prescriber order entry (CPOE)
systems and bar code-enabled technologies, what hardware,
software, and human factors did the authors identify?
·
Consider how each of these factors can negatively impact
patient safety and quality of care.
·
How might these factors translate to the usability,
implementation, and outcomes of other informatics
technologies?
·
Review the media presentation
3. Selecting New Technologies
in this week’s Learning Resources. How did presenter Dr.
Patricia Button take the above factors into consideration when
selecting an informatics technology for her health care setting?
Per attachment
·
When planning and selecting a new informatics system, what
steps should informaticists take to ensure the system will
address the needs of their health care setting? In addition, how
can informatics leaders encourage all nurses to commit to using
a new technology?
To complete:
Submit a 3- to 4-page paper that addresses each part of this
Assignment to include reference page with references listed
below in APA format
·
Part 1: Design Considerations …Per Chapter 30 ( per the x5
scanned docs w/ numbers attached)
·
Identify two major design considerations associated with
each
of the following: hardware, software, human factors. (6
considerations in total)
o
Describe why informaticists should play close attention to each
of these considerations when evaluating an informatics
technology. In your description, include the potential dangers
each of these pose to patient safety and quality of care.
·
Part 2: Employee Workarounds
o
4. Even with a carefully thought out design and implementation,
nurses and other health care employees may adopt workarounds.
With this reality in mind:
§
What benefits and/or consequences do you associate with
workarounds?
§
When selecting an informatics technology, would you opt to
purchase a system that mitigates the opportunity for
workarounds; or do you believe that workarounds are sometimes
necessary? Justify your response.
****Note:
The responses should focus on informatics technologies in
general, not just bar code scanners as portrayed in the scenario.
You may, however, use specific examples such as bar code
scanners and other informatics technologies to justify your
responses.
