- Record each information source with an identifier – letter or number Highlight information
- You need to know what you are looking for before you decide what is important.
- 1 – Summary: summarize if you want to record only the general ideas of large amounts of material. 2 – Quotation: when you believe that some sentence or passage in its original wording might make an effective addition to your papers, transcribe the material exactly as it appears, word for word, comma for comma. Use quotation marks. Power of the author’s words, powerful phrase or passage 3 – Paraphrase: If you require detailed notes on specific sentences and passages but do not need the exact wording, you may wish to paraphrase, that is, to restate the materials in your own words. But avoid quoting too often. Use a quotation only if the author has said something so well that whoever reads the paper benefits from knowing the author’s exact words. Otherwise, you want to paraphrase.
