Plants survive in their environment through various adaptations and responses to stimuli. They respond to light by bending towards it using chemicals in their shoots. They respond to gravity by growing roots downward and stems upward. They respond to water by growing roots toward its source, like mangrove trees. Plants adapt to their environments through structures like cacti using thick waxy covers and spines to conserve water in dry deserts or trees growing large leaves to catch sunlight in shaded forests. They also go dormant during extreme weather, stopping growth and photosynthesis until conditions improve.

And yet things still go sideways, tasks are late, and everyone is kind of cranky by the end. So we do some root cause analysis try to figure out where it went wrong… but we don’t go deep enough. It turns out, the source of the problem is all in our heads. We’re just not naturally wired for project management.

– Why do we not foresee risks? It’s the illusion of control, compounded by confirmation bias.
– Why are we bad at estimating? Blame the planning fallacy and optimism bias.
– Why does work not stay on schedule? A combination of Parkinson’s Law and student syndrome.
This session will answer all these questions and others by drawing on the fields of psychology, neuroscience and behavioural economics and applying it to project management. Finally, we’ll close out by exploring debiasing strategies to help counter the misguided tendencies of our brains.

- 6. Numbers to pay attention to : • 1 in 4 of today’s 20-year-olds will become disabled before retiring. 1 6
- 7. 7 • The average individual long term disability claim is 31 months. 2 • And of those there is a 38% chance of being disabled for 5 years or more. 3
- 8. After all it would be kind of crazy to think you are planning on becoming disabled ! 8
- 9. R i g h t ? 9
- 10. 10 Who gets up in the morning and thinks to themselves, “Today is the day ?”
- 11. 11 “Today I am going to have myself a nice disability. Now let’s see--what kind will it be ?”
- 12. 12 Of course that is silly. We don’t expect to be disabled – at least most of us don’t…
- 13. 13 We take it for granted we’ll we’ll have continued good health.
- 14. 14 It probably has to do with self-preservation, or something like that.
- 15. 15 Possibly we should override that assumption of guaranteed good health and decide a Plan B might actually be a smart idea after all.
- 16. 16 And we might sleep better at night having a Plan B, just in case.
- 17. 17 Maybe the cost wouldn't seem that much, considering . . .
- 18. 18 The unprotected potential loss of our livelihood, for some unknown period of time, is not a pleasant thought.
