Norwegian has two written standards, Bokmål and Nynorsk, which developed from Danish and rural Norwegian dialects respectively. There is no single spoken standard, as Norway has many regional dialects. Bokmål is used by 85-90% of Norwegians and is associated with urban culture, while Nynorsk is used by 10-15% and associated with rural values. Both forms are used in primary education, and students are free to speak their local dialects in school.
