Jose Rizal was a Filipino nationalist and writer during the Spanish colonial period. He was born to a wealthy family and studied in the Philippines, Spain, France, and Germany. He wrote two novels, Noli Me Tangere in 1886 and El Filibusterismo in 1891, which exposed the corruption of the Spanish friars in the Philippines. After returning to the Philippines at age 26, he was exiled to Dapitan in 1892 for his nationalist activities. In 1896, he became involved with Filipino revolutionaries fighting for independence and was executed by the Spanish that same year.
