The document analyzes 9 shots from a music video through the lenses of film theory. Shot 1 provides a close-up of the lead singer. Shots 2-3 show a woman walking down a road and the band performing, both relating to the song lyrics. Shots 4-5 reference mood through billboards and lighting a match. Shots 6-7 suggest dangerous intentions through petrol. Shots 8-9 indicate a narrative following Tzvetan Todorov's 5 stages, with a siren representing stage 3 and the woman planning to burn herself with petrol and a match.
We have decided to analyse the teaser trailer to Cloverfield as it is an excellent example as it does not give away any of the narrative, the title of the film and leaves everything entirely down to the imagination of the viewer.

Matthew 3:1-12 Second Sunday In Advent: The Revolution of GodDavid Faulkner
Sermon on Matthew 3:1-12, seeing the Kingdom of God as a revolution, which draws on outsiders, not the expected key players; which sees God in Jesus coming to reign over his people and the world; and which requires repentance.
1. Nine Shot Sequence:
Here it shows a close up of the lead singer Liam Gallagher, the lasts around 0.5 seconds from 0.13 to 0.17
seconds on the video. Through media language, it follows Carol Vernallis theory, of the multiple use of close
ups, so it also agrees with Andrew Goodwin theory which is when the record companies demand lots of close
up’s of the main vocalist so that the audience remains focus on the video and does not lose interest.
2. In this shot it shows a woman walking down a deserted road in the middle of the day, in a long shot. The shot
lasts 0.1 second, from 0.55 to 0.56 in the video clip. Again the video goes along with Carol Vernallis theory has
the diegesis shows the woman walking in time to the sound of the ride cymbal on the drum kit.
3. In this shot, it shows the whole band performing at night, they used a track to move slowly to the right while
sticking to a long shot view, and the shot lasted 0.1 second at 1.05 to 1.06. On this shot it is showing the video is
moving with the lyrics as Liam says ‘And all of the stars are fading away’ it cuts to the night scene and shows no
stars in the sky.
4. In this shot, it uses a rule of third and the camera angle is a long shot. It is showing through a long shot that the
billboards are showing pictures of clouds indicating that the woman is happy. This I believe is a relation to the
audience watching, to those that have any feelings related to the mood of the persona.
5. This shot is an extreme close up of a box of matches which someone lighting a match, the shot lasts 0.4
seconds and it is set at 0.01- 0.04. They have used a technique where they start from the end before showing
the beginning of how and who got into that situation.
6. In this shot, it’s a close up of the persona lifting up a petrol handle suggesting a few theories about what she is
going to do with it referring back to the match stick at the beginning of the clip. This shot lasts 0.1 second and
starts on 1.27 and ends on 1.28.
7. This shot shows a siren flashing indicating that something is going to happen, which would be Tzvetan Todorov
theory of the way the narrative is structured into five stages. I estimate the stage of the siren to be around stage
three. The camera angle of the siren is an extreme close up, the shot lasts around 0.1 at 3.40 to 3.41.
8. In this shot it shows the woman carrying a petrol canister, in a long shot
suggesting that she is going to burn something, again revolving around the Tzvetan Todorov theory. The shot
begins at 3:48 and ends at 3.49, lasting around 0.1 second.
9. This is the final shot of the video, and it shows the persona holding a match suggesting that it’s actually herself
she plans on setting fire to after pouring petrol onto herself, the medium close up lasts around 0.7 seconds and
begins at 4.48 and finishes at 4.55.
