Benjamin Colonna describes his 1878 ascent of Mount Shasta in northern California as part of his work with the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. He traveled with a group of Native Americans from Sisson's Hotel to the edge of the timberline, camping for the night as they prepared to climb to the 14,440 foot summit the next day. The following morning, after a ceremony by the medicine man, the group began the difficult task of transporting 750 pounds of equipment up the snowy slopes, guided by the Native Americans accustomed to the mountain.
