- 4. Classic thriller! At first sight, he looks innocent and is trying to plead his innocence. The audience may think that he is the victim and the villain is talking to him. This obviously does not turn out to happen. The action of him smiling is also mysterious as he looks innocent but it makes the audience confused. This is because we want to know why he is smiling.
- 5. We then realise that he is talking to the police. This over the shoulder shot may be trying to present the fact the bright light means something bad is about to happen or has happened. This is because of verisimilitude. This is presented as police often shine a bright torch when detecting a crime scene
- 6. As the man is talking to the police he catches a glimpse of this silver watch. By doing a close up shot suggests that it will play a vital role as to what will happen next. This builds up mystery and confusion again as the original man may now be the villain.
- 7. The mis en scene of this shot, in particular the fence around the land gives the impression that it is private land. This builds mystery as the audience want to know why the man is there at this time of the day. The aggressive behaviour toward the police shows that he may have something to hide. This is tension as we want to know what.
- 8. The same watch that the police was wearing. This gives the impression that he stole the watch from the police and obviously managed to escape. This become very nerve-racking for the audience as we want to know what he is going to the watch.
- 9. The mis en scene of the fence being there proves that he stole it. Why did he steal? Who did he do it for? All remains a mystery. This man is turning out to be an antagonist.
- 10. Mis en scene of a metal scrap yard tells the audience that he stole the fence to sell for money. Is the guy poor? As well as this, the sound of him negotiating suggests that he does not give up quickly.
- 11. Still not giving up. This reinforces that he does not give up. This bit of the opening scene plays a crucial role towards the plot. We found this out later as he does not give up to become a news reporter.
