The trailer analyzes camera shots, editing, mise-en-scene, sound, and representation/theories used. It uses close-ups of doors locking and CCTV footage to establish tension. Quick cuts are used to build pace. Props like masks and weapons suggest violence. Costumes distinguish the wealthy family from others. Non-diegetic music and diegetic sounds like gunshots set the tone. Common horror techniques like following a child in danger are represented. Theories of equilibrium disruption and identification with protecting loved ones are touched on.
this is my analysis of the advertising campaign for the film insidious; including the trailer, poster and magazine cover for my ocr a2 media studies coursework.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. CAMERA
There is a close up of the
doors shutting and them
arming the house getting
ready for the purge. It is a
close up to show how
secure they are and what
they can stand up to.
There is a long high angle shot of each time they
show the CCTV. This is a typical style of location
to connote CCTV footage. The use of CCTV
connotes the action is real and adds authenticity
to the action. It has huge effect to the audience
as they might think that it is happening now and
they will be scared and that is what is
conventional for a horror trailer.
There is a panning shot of the man turning the corner with
his torch shining and it shows the blood on the wall. This
connotes that the man who is hiding has wrote that and the
family has to look for him to save their lives but he doesn't
want to be found. The audience will think that the antagonist
has drawn that because it is what is normally done in horror
films.
3. There is an over the shoulder shot of the child looking
at the TV, it has the news and the CCTV they have
outside the house. This signifies how scared they are
as they need to keep a close eye on the front door. This
is also suggesting that they want to know what is
happening but they don’t want it to happen to them.
There is a medium shot of the boy and the girl
kissing in the bedroom. This suggest that they are
happy with each other. This also shows that they
know that they are safe when they are together as
they have each others back. Their positioning in
this shot connotes romance who close they are
together.
There is a low level shot as the camera is on the floor but the child is under the
bed so it is level with the face. This connotes how vulnerable, weak and innocent
a child are in horror films which will make the antagonist appear scarier. This
suggest that she is hiding from the man with the boots on as he is going to try
and kill her. It is a medium close up as we want to see her facial expressions but
we still want to know what is happening around her. The way that a child is under
the bed connotes the typical place where children will hide when they are scared.
The boots seem big and scary which will make the audience scared.
4. EDITING
There is a dissolve transition from the
shot where they show the whole village,
to a black screen with ‘because one night
a year’. This connotes that the people in
the village is happy until this one night
where all crime will become legal.
There are fade in and fade out transitions from
the sun set with clouds to the couple kissing.
This shows what they see as heaven to them
and it shows how happy they are. The colour is
white because it is a light colour and shows
peaceful and happiness.
There is a focus pull of the mum
holding the gun who is in focus, then
it pulls to the man at the window
being in focus. This connotes the fact
that she doesn’t know that he is there
and showing that the film is going to
be scary how the man is wearing the
mask
5. The pace of the trailer starts off slow which connotes how chilled
out they are and how happy they are; but then the pace builds up
with loads of quick short shots which connotes that the actual film
is going to be the same style as the trailer and starts off slow and
ends up fast paced.
There is a sequence of shots that starts off
with an over the shoulder shot looking at
the man sharpening the machete, then it
zooms in a bit for a long shot of the man,
then it zooms right in to a close up. This
shows what is happening when the man is
getting prepared for the purge and the
family next door is shocked about it. It is a
sequence of shots so that the audience will
think about the story and not any fancy
zooms or transactions.
The establishing shot of a
high angle shot of the
whole village. This will set
the scene that it is a rich
village as there are
swimming pools in the
back gardens and the
houses are big.
6. MISE-EN-SCENE - SETTING
The setting is wealthy suburb where the main protagonists
own a big house with top of the range security. This
connotes that because they are so successful and have it
so easy they could be a target for people less fortunate of
business rivals who want their wealth and success.
7. MISE-EN-SCENE – PROPS
The props used in the trailer are: machete, guns, baseball bats and steel
doors. All of these props shows how violent the film will be as they are all
weapons. Also that have these weapons just because all crime is legal for
12 hours and they will be killing or shooting people. Another prop is the
masks that the antagonist wear. this suggest that they don’t want their
identity to be recognised and most people find people wearing masks
scary as they don’t know who is behind them. This is conventional in
Splatter and Slasher movies such as: Halloween and Scream. By hiding
their identity, it makes the audience feel scared because they do no know
who is behind the mask.
8. MISE-EN-SCENE - COSTUME
The family are wearing smart clothing but the people on the streets are wearing
casual clothing. This connotes that the people who are wearing smart clothing are rich
and the other people are not. They are willing to kill people for money when the family
said no when someone offered them to kill someone. The antagonists are wearing a
white dress which is anti stereotype as normally they wear dark clothing but white isn’t
a dark colour.
9. MISE-EN-SCENE - LIGHTING
The lighting is anti stereotype as the antagonist is in high key lighting and the
protagonist are in low key lighting. Normally low key lighting is all about the evil side
and the high key lighting is more about the hero. There is a difference in lighting to
so that you can see the action taking place but it also needs to show you that it is
night time as it is stereotypical.
10. SOUND – NON DIEGETIC
There is a non-diegetic sound of an low organ at the start which makes out that the
family are calm and happy with each other and with the world. The music had been
drowned out by the machete being sharpened. The music also stopped after Charlie
lets the black guy in. this is to build up tension and so that the family can talk without
the music drowning them out. The music stops when the mum hits the other woman
around the head. This is an anti stereotype as you normally think of women being
scared and weak in movies. The non diegetic sound has come back on right at the
end when the title of the film comes up.
11. SOUND - DIEGETIC
There is a diegetic sound of gun shots when they are showing the CCTV footage.
This connotes that there is a lot of violence in the film and gives use an idea that it is
a horror/action film. The trailer has an emphasis on the machete being sharpen by the
next door neighbour. This has drowned out the music and this also connotes that the
film is about violence. You had a siren for the start of the purge. Also you have the
sound of the mechanical doors shutting. This suggests wealth in the family as they
have the money to afford the automatic security doors.
12. REPRESENTATION
The stereotype of a family having one child is happy as they are walking in the
sunset. This has the connotation of a calm happy colour. You have the representation
of wealth as when the boy and girl are kissing, you have trophies on the shelves in
the bedroom. This shows that they have won a lot of trophies and they have the
money to do that. The stereotypes of horror having lots of quick short shots is
represented here as it will build up tension and will get more people interested in the
film. It is an anti stereotype where the antagonist is not normally formally dressed but
he is.
13. THEORIES
• Todorov- Todorov’s theory is only established in the purge trailer. The equilibrium is when the women are laughing and the family are having a
meal together. Then the disruption would be when the young child lets the African American man in their home. The recognition of disruption is
when the antagonists turn up on the families doorstep and demand the stranger is handed over. The attempt to repair is when they attempt to
defend themselves form the antagonists attacks, however the new equilibrium is not established because that would give the story away and
they want to attract you to go to the cinema and see the movie.
• Propp- Propp’s character theory is also touched on. The hero would be the main family and the villain would be the group of antagonists who
rang the doorbell. In addition it could be argued that the family are also the princess as they need rescuing from the villains, as well as this the
stranger of black ethnicity could also be seen as he is being hunted by the villains. The stranger could also be seen as the helper as he helps
to fend of the villains.
• Uses &Gratification Theory- Personal identification would be that people would understand you would do anything to protect your loved ones.
Inform would be how at the start of the trailer it tells you about the crime rate and what the purge is and does. Entertainment would be the
action, fighting and jump scares etc. as they evoke a response from us. Social response would be talking to someone about what happened in
the movie. For example asking each other why the little boy would open the door to a stranger or even the question which is like an enigma
which is why are they after the stranger.
• Socio-Economic Groups- People who would watch this movie would be in group C1-E. This is because in group A for example they are on
high income so are less likely to watch this big blockbuster movie and instead opt for educational of Art House cinema films. Where as
someone who is in C1 for example a junior manager are more likely to watch these as they are younger so will want to get scared with their
friends.
• ITV Sales Demographics- The groups most likely to watch this movie are AD,AA and A3. This is because of the age rating as younger people
would not be able to watch it.In addition the adults are more likely to want to watch it to get scared with their friends and partners as it is
co0mmon for these groups to like being scared.
• Hypodermic Needle Theory- Doesn’t really apply to this trailer because it is not really trying to force a message on the audience, however if
they wanted to ‘inject’ the audience with a message it would be do-able as commonly more passive audiences watch the big movies rather
than the cerebral movies.
• 2 Step Flow- This theory can be applied to the trailer as the ‘Opinion Leaders’ could be the rich family who are passing on a message to the
audience watching who are usually willing to except this ideology. This message could be the idea that you shouldn't be nice to strangers and
you should only look after yourselves because if you try to help it could bring repercussions.
• Target Audience According To Life styles- This could be groupies and trendies as they want to be accepted by their peer groups. They
might see this movie as a chance to seem cool and brave in front of their peer group in an attempt to gain admiration and acceptance form the
group and see this movie as a great way to do that.
