SDGs and Water
This document discusses monitoring and implementation of SDG-6, which focuses on water and sanitation. It outlines the 6 targets of SDG-6 related to drinking water, sanitation, water quality, water use, water resources management, and water-related ecosystems. Summary of the survey Central Asia activities on climate smart agriculture
A FAO online survey titled 'Central Asia activties on climate smart agriculture' was conducted during 6 weeks in May to June 2016. The survey was filled in by 131 respondents from 28 countries.
It's aim was to take stock of the challenges posed by climate change to the agriculture sector in the Central Asian countries, of which the summary of results is outlined in this presentation.

This document discusses the role of water information systems in coping with water scarcity and drought in WANA countries. It recommends that WANA countries improve their use of existing water information systems and data to help address water scarcity issues. A key gap is the lack of accessible and reliable water data in most WANA countries. The document advocates developing a water scarcity and drought monitoring system for the WANA region based on common indicators. It analyzes various hydrological and socioeconomic indicators used for assessing water scarcity and drought. Improving data collection, management and sharing between organizations and countries in the region is important for effective monitoring, prediction and response.
Helvetas: Water for Food
Public-Private Partnerships and Multi Stakeholder Strategies -- Food production will have to meet the needs of two billion additional people by 2050. Besides existing stresses of inequity in resource use and resource depletion, climate variability and change are additional stressors. These changes put at risk both local food security and global commodity markets. Large-scale applications of improved water use and management approaches are needed to build resilience in agricultural production systems. HELVETAS is implementing ‘Water for Food’ programs worldwide to optimize water consumption in agricultural production. It partners with public and private sector stakeholders to raise awareness and build capacities on efficient water management and to enhance buyers’ demand and support for water saving approaches. Melchior Lengsfeld and Rupa Mukerji will share HELVETAS’ innovative push-pull-policy program for the two key crops of rice and cotton, which account for over 30% of global irrigation water consumption. HELVETAS (www.helvetas.org), the leading Switzerland-based international development NGO, has 60 years of experience in rural economy, water & infrastructure, environment & climate change, and governance & peace. HELVETAS is working in 32 countries to fight rural poverty. In 2015, the 501(c)(3) HELVETAS USA was launched to strengthen relationships with key US partners.

1) Benefit sharing mechanisms (BSMs) are important for equitable water management between different users and sectors. The CGIAR Challenge Program on Water and Food's experience in 10 river basins provides lessons on BSMs.
2) In the Mekong River Basin, balancing hydropower and fisheries through BSMs like improved irrigation techniques can generate win-win outcomes for energy production and food security.
3) In the Volta River Basin, research found that losses from small reservoirs are smaller than assumed, so developing more small reservoirs could significantly benefit smallholders with minimal water impacts.Sanitation and hygiene sector trends
This presentation by Ambrose Kibuuka is a part of IRC’s in-house “What’s for Lunch series”, It reviews progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for sanitation and hygiene, sector trends focusing on Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and sanitation marketing, and how rich nations achieved universal access to sanitation. It also briefly looks at WASH linkages with climate change, stunting, nutrition, and gender and social inclusion. The presentation concludes that unsafely managed sanitation, especially in rural areas, remains a challenge in developing countries as a result of population growth, climate change and the lack of funding for on-site sanitation and faecal sludge removal. Systems strengthening (in particular access to financing) and strong public commitment are required to achieve universal access to sanitation by 2030. The presentation includes a list of 21 references.

Consumer segments are identified by their perception of biofuels. Consumer segments can be targeted by different communication and educational tools based on their habits and preferred communication channels. The identification is based on a 100 question survey in NC and TN. Segment names were picked the last, the attributes and differences are identified by groups make this useful. The group percentages by counties can be predicted by census data or even smaller areas. This supports decision of an investment in a particular region or decide where to make E85 available at gas stations in the first round.

This document summarizes a research project studying exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from traditionally smoking salmon among members of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. The project observed volunteers smoking salmon in a tipi and smoke shed, collecting air and urine samples to analyze PAH exposure. Analysis found lower PAH levels in the tipi air and volunteers' urine, suggesting lower exposure. PAHs were also detected in traditionally smoked but not commercially smoked salmon. The results were shared with the community to balance health and preservation of cultural practices.

The Community Engagement Core works with Pacific Northwest tribes to evaluate chemical exposures that impact tribal health and engage in culturally appropriate risk reduction. Recent projects include (1) measuring tribesmembers' exposure to PAHs from traditionally smoking salmon and determining how these chemicals are processed in the body, and (2) monitoring contaminants in tribal shellfish beds using passive sampling devices to protect this important resource and identify risks. The Core is developing a Virtual Tribal Lab Consortium to share environmental health resources between tribes, universities, and the EPA to enable tribal communities to conduct their own studies.

AMC Evaluation Final Report 30-9-2015
This document provides a final report on a food security evaluation conducted in Nicaragua. The evaluation assessed a food security project run by Acción Médica Cristiana (AMC) that promoted various agricultural practices across 38 communities. The methodology included interviews with project participants and non-participants, as well as focus groups. Key findings included low adoption of soil conservation practices and animal containment. Higher adoption was seen for pest management and vegetable production when inputs were provided, but adoption decreased without continued inputs. The evaluation concluded the interventions showed little sustainability or impact on overall food security. It recommended promoting vegetables without providing inputs and focusing training on demand-driven practices appropriate to the local context.

In this slideshow, Dr. Christine Negra discusses the work of the Landscapes for People, Food and Nature (LFPN) Inititative, an international collaborative initiative of cross-sectoral knowledge sharing, dialogue and action to support the integrated management of rural landscapes for food production, ecosystem conservation, and sustainable livelihoods. Dr. Negra, who is co-Leader of the research working group of the Initiative, discusses the five working groups of the Initiative and some of the exciting knowledge products they have released so far.

This document summarizes social science research on farmers' perspectives regarding nutrient loss reduction efforts in Iowa. It finds that while many farmers are now aware of the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy, there are still perceived barriers to implementation like costs, yield concerns, and lack of knowledge. The main sources of fertilizer information for farmers are dealers, but they are among the least likely to discuss the nutrient strategy. The research is informing ongoing efforts to raise awareness, address common barriers through research and incentives, and engage private sector advisors more directly. Continued surveys suggest commitment to making long-term progress on agriculture's impacts to water quality in Iowa.

Ehsan Dulloo, Bioversity International Conservation and Availability Programme Leader, presented at the international conference Enhanced genepool utilization - Capturing wild relative and landrace diversity for crop improvement, in Cambridge, UK, 16-20 June 2014.
It is said that “you can't manage what you don't measure”. The unprecedented global loss of agricultural species, varieties and associated traditional knowledge is of increasing concern, threatening the provisioning, regulatory, supporting and cultural ecosystem services of importance to the livelihoods of the poor as well as the welfare of broader society. Such services include such public goods as maintaining agroecosystem resilience and future option values.
Unfortunately, although many crop genetic resources (CGR) are widely recognized as being threatened, there is only limited information available regarding actual status. Only isolated efforts at monitoring have been undertaken. Conventional monitoring efforts, where they exist at all, have been subject to limitations due to ad hoc approaches that lack rigorous survey and sampling approaches, do not adequately account for search effort costs or systematically involve the participation of local-level actors, and are usually based on collections instead of direct observations in the field. Furthermore, the links between specific CGR conservation levels/configurations and the provision of specific ecosystem services are poorly understood.
There is thus an urgent need for the development of a systematic approach to the monitoring of CGR. This presentation draws on the outcome of a recent Bioversity International/CIP international expert workshop aimed at the development of such an approach. The proposed multi-scale approach builds on a wide range of existing monitoring experiences and a review of the literature related to agricultural biodiversity-relevant ecosystem services. A number of proposed indicators that could be used to assess CGR threat levels, be used for monitoring purposes and/or assist in evaluating ecosystem service public/private good trade-offs arising from agricultural intensification are presented, with a view to supporting the potential for prioritizing, designing and implementing on-farm/in situ conservation measures that actively involve farmers, support livelihoods, complement existing ex situ conservation efforts and facilitate access and benefit sharing.

This document discusses sustainability indicators for aquaculture and consumer preferences for sustainably farmed fish in Bangladesh. It presents research on sustainability performance indicators used to measure the environmental, social, economic, and biological sustainability of aquaculture. The study aims to investigate consumer perceptions of these indicators and how they influence preferences for different levels of sustainability in farmed tilapia. Through a discrete choice experiment with consumers, the research finds that safety labels signaling sustainability are preferred over conventional labels, and consumers who eat more farmed fish prefer products from farms with higher sustainability levels.
A Food Systems Perspective on Seafood by Prof. Peter Oosterveer
In recent years, a food systems perspective has been promoted to develop a more comprehensive perspective on supplying sufficient, sustainable and healthy food to consumers. This shift away from an orientation in research and policy on increasing food production towards a focus on consumers and dietary outcomes seems promising in many respects. At the same time, this perspective needs further reflection with respect to focus and integration.

This study examined respondents' subjective preferences for river management through a Q methodology experiment and discrete choice experiment. Five distinct viewpoints on river management emerged from the Q sorting: 1) Ethical and ecological concerns are paramount, 2) Financial controls on major polluters, 3) Hierarchical government-driven leadership, 4) Pragmatic use of the environment and collaboration between polluters, and 5) Pollution control via legislation and monitoring. When integrated into choice experiment modeling, respondents' subjective viewpoints had a significant influence on their preferences for river water quality attributes, even after controlling for socioeconomic characteristics. The results suggest incorporating public perspectives is important for understanding preferences in environmental valuation.

The study surveyed 100 farmers in West Bengal to assess their educational levels and knowledge of topics like pesticides, fertilizers and soil erosion. The findings showed that the majority of farmers had not completed elementary education and were unaware of environmental impacts. Only 11% were aware of sustainable agriculture and food security. The conclusion calls for educational programs to increase farmer awareness of these issues for the benefit of communities and the nation.

This study examined the influence of economic and political factors on access to improved water and sanitation in 11 sub-Saharan African nations from 2005-2008. The researchers found that higher gross national income was positively associated with greater access to improved water sources and sanitation facilities. More politically stable governments were also found to positively influence shorter travel times to water sources. Government effectiveness demonstrated the strongest associations with improved water access, water treatment, sanitation access, and private sanitation facilities. Overall, the findings suggest that economic development and stable, effective governance can help increase access to safe water and sanitation in sub-Saharan Africa.

Globally, over 1.7 billion people lack basic sanitation services and 494 million practice open defecation. Issues facing rural sanitation include poor infrastructure, limited technology, and lack of priority given to rural needs. Recommendations include raising awareness, community participation, inter-sectoral collaboration, and setting local targets to achieve SDG goals.

Community-Scientist Relations When asked who understood effects of oil spill: ● People in Community understand effects (76%) ● Scientists understand effects (36%) Interestingly, 84% of participants noted a partnership between scientists and community could address issues regarding the BP oil spill

Results of the 'Safe Shrimp' Study ● ● ● ● Samples of white shrimp were collected from specific, local harvest areas and from two local grocery stores in the fall of 2010 Each sample was analyzed for the presence and levels of >61 specific petroleum-related compounds, many found in Louisiana sweet crude oil Results are given in “parts per billion” and indicate almost no crude oil or other hydrocarbon compounds are present in the locally harvested samples Observed levels of total hydrocarbons were well below State and Federal consumption safety threshold levels
