The Deepwater Horizon rig, owned and operated by offshore-oil-drilling company Transocean
and leased by oil company BP, was situated in the Macondo oil prospect in the Mississippi
Canyon, a valley in the continental shelf. The oil well over which it was positioned was located
on the seabed 4,993 feet (1,522 metres) below the surface and extended approximately 18,000
feet (5,486 metres) into the rock. On the night of April 20 a surge of natural gas blasted through
a concrete core recently installed by contractor Halliburton in order to seal the well for later use.
It later emerged through documents released by Wikileaks that a similar incident had occurred on
a BP-owned rig in the Caspian Sea in September 2008. Both cores were likely too weak to
withstand the pressure because they were composed of a concrete mixture that used nitrogen gas
to accelerate curing.
Once released by the fracture of the core, the natural gas traveled up the Deepwater rig’s riser to
the platform, where it ignited, killing 11 workers and injuring 17. The rig capsized and sank on
the morning of April 22, rupturing the riser, through which drilling mud had been injected in
order to counteract the upward pressure of oil and natural gas. Without any opposing force, oil
began to discharge into the gulf. The volume of oil escaping the damaged well—originally
estimated by BP to be about 1,000 barrels per day—was thought by U.S. government officials to
have peaked at more than 60,000 barrels per day.
Economic prospects in the Gulf Coast states were dire, as the spill affected many of the
industries upon which residents depended. More than a third of federal waters in the gulf were
closed to fishing at the peak of the spill, due to fears of contamination. A moratorium on offshore
drilling, enacted by U.S. Pres. Barack Obama’s administration despite a district court reversal,
left an estimated 8,000–12,000 temporarily unemployed. Few travelers were willing to face the
prospect of petroleum-sullied beaches, leaving those dependent on tourism struggling to
supplement their incomes. Following demands by Obama, BP created a $20 billion
compensation fund for those affected by the spill. A year later nearly a third of the fund had been
paid out, though lack of oversight allowed government entities to submit wildly inflated claims,
some unrelated to the spill. By 2013 the fund was largely depleted.
Recovery was incremental. As oil dispersed, portions of the gulf began reopening to fishing in
July, and by October the majority of the closed areas were judged safe. State governments
struggled to draw attention to unsoiled or newly scrubbed beaches with advertising campaigns,
often drawing on funds from BP. Oil continued to wash ashore in many areas, and much of it
could not be removed, either because of logistical reasons—mats of subm.

The Deepwater Horizon rig, owned and operated by offshore-oil-drilling company Transocean
and leased by oil company BP, was situated in the Macondo oil prospect in the Mississippi
Canyon, a valley in the continental shelf. The oil well over which it was positioned was located
on the seabed 4,993 feet (1,522 metres) below the surface and extended approximately 18,000
feet (5,486 metres) into the rock. On the night of April 20 a surge of natural gas blasted through
a concrete core recently installed by contractor Halliburton in order to seal the well for later use.
It later emerged through documents released by Wikileaks that a similar incident had occurred on
a BP-owned rig in the Caspian Sea in September 2008. Both cores were likely too weak to
withstand the pressure because they were composed of a concrete mixture that used nitrogen gas
to accelerate curing.
Once released by the fracture of the core, the natural gas traveled up the Deepwater rig’s riser to
the platform, where it ignited, killing 11 workers and injuring 17. The rig capsized and sank on
the morning of April 22, rupturing the riser, through which drilling mud had been injected in
order to counteract the upward pressure of oil and natural gas. Without any opposing force, oil
began to discharge into the gulf. The volume of oil escaping the damaged well—originally
estimated by BP to be about 1,000 barrels per day—was thought by U.S. government officials to
have peaked at more than 60,000 barrels per day.
Economic prospects in the Gulf Coast states were dire, as the spill affected many of the
industries upon which residents depended. More than a third of federal waters in the gulf were
closed to fishing at the peak of the spill, due to fears of contamination. A moratorium on offshore
drilling, enacted by U.S. Pres. Barack Obama’s administration despite a district court reversal,
left an estimated 8,000–12,000 temporarily unemployed. Few travelers were willing to face the
prospect of petroleum-sullied beaches, leaving those dependent on tourism struggling to
supplement their incomes. Following demands by Obama, BP created a $20 billion
compensation fund for those affected by the spill. A year later nearly a third of the fund had been
paid out, though lack of oversight allowed government entities to submit wildly inflated claims,
some unrelated to the spill. By 2013 the fund was largely depleted.
Recovery was incremental. As oil dispersed, portions of the gulf began reopening to fishing in
July, and by October the majority of the closed areas were judged safe. State governments
struggled to draw attention to unsoiled or newly scrubbed beaches with advertising campaigns,
often drawing on funds from BP. Oil continued to wash ashore in many areas, and much of it
could not be removed, either because of logistical reasons—mats of subm.

As a result of the leaks, BP paid $25 million in fines and was ordered to correct the problems. A smaller oil– water mixture leak occurred in 2009 during a pressure test of a pipeline at BP’s Lis-burne Processing Center. A 2010 investigation by ProPublica revealed various parts of the Alaskan North Slope pipelines were in such bad shape that 148 sections were labeled as in “imminent danger” of rupturing.

inch carbon steel pipeline operated by Enbridge Energy Partners, the U.S. branch of Enbridge Inc., Canada's largest transporter of crude oil. With Enbridge's costs already totaling more than $765 million, it is the most expensive oil pipeline spill since the U.S.
government began keeping records in 1968. An independent federal agency, the National Transportation Safety Board, is investigating the accident, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has launched criminal and civil probes. Despite the scope of the
damage, the Enbridge spill hasn't attracted much national attention, perhaps because it occurred just 10 days after oil stopped spewing from BP's Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico, which had ruptured three months earlier. Early reports about the Enbridge
spill also downplayed its seriousness. Just about everybody, including the EPA officials who rushed to Marshall, expected the mess to be cleaned up in a couple of months. What the EPA didn't know then, however, was that 6B was carrying bitumen, the
dirtiest, stickiest oil on the market. Bitumen is so thick—about the consistency of peanut butter—that it doesn't flow from a well like the crude oil found in most of the nation's pipelines. Instead the tarry resin is either steamed or strip-mined from sandy soil.
Then it is thinned with large quantities of liquid chemicals so it can be pumped through pipelines. These diluents usually include benzene, a known human carcinogen. At this point it becomes diluted bitumen, or dilbit. Some environmental organizations say
dilbit is so acidic and abrasive that it's more likely to corrode and weaken pipes than conventional oil. The oil industry disputes that hypothesis. It says dilbit is no different from conventional crude. No independent scientific research has been done to
determine who is right. But a seven-month investigation of the Enbridge spill by InsideClimate News has revealed one fact neither side disputes: The cleanup of the Kalamazoo River dilbit spill was unlike any cleanup the EPA had ever tackled before. Instead of
remaining on top of the water, as most conventional crude oil does, the bitumen gradually sank to the river's bottom, where normal cleanup techniques and equipment were of little use. Meanwhile, the benzene and other chemicals that had been added to
liquefy the bitumen evaporated into the air. InsideClimate News also learned that federal and local officials didn't discover until more than a week after the spill that 6B was carrying dilbit, not conventional oil. Federal regulations do not require pipeline
operators to disclose that information. And Enbridge officials did not volunteer it. Mark Durno, an EPA deputy incident commander who is still involved in the cleanup in Marshall, is among those who were surprised by what they found. "Submerged oil is what
makes this thing more unique than even the Gulf of Mexico situation," Durno told InsideClimate News. "Yes, that was huge—but they knew the beast they were dealing with. This experience was brand new for us. It would have been brand new for anyone in
the United States." Jim Rutherford, the public health officer for Michigan's Calhoun County, said he had "no idea what I was driving into," when he rushed to Marshall the day 6B ruptured. "Enbridge was caught off guard initially, much like all of us were,"
