The document discusses the effectiveness of combining a horror film main product with ancillary texts like posters and a radio trailer. It describes how the main product aims to shock and frighten audiences using horror tropes. Ancillary texts were designed to hint at the genre without revealing spoilers, through techniques like embedding horror conventions and using a mysterious tagline. The poster uses horror elements like a threatening antagonist image. The radio trailer builds tension with scary music and dialogue while revealing just enough to intrigue listeners. Overall, the document argues that the ancillary texts complement the main horror film product well and help attract their targeted 15+ audience.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. MAIN PRODUCT
Our main product aimed to provide pleasure and entertainment to the
audience. Examples of pleasures may be to simply gaining pleasure
from watching your favorite actors as they are seen as role models, to
socialise with friends by taking a trip to the cinema or to educate
yourself in historical films and documentaries.
Our genre of our main product is horror therefore we wanted to shock and
frighten our audience. To do this, we used a male dominant character to
attack our vulnerable female character while using fast paced shots and
tense music all building up to the moment of attack.
Our main product was rated 15 therefore linked with the stereotypical age
of drug use and social networking use. We hoped to scare our audience
while at the same time, promote important issues and raise awareness
of drugs and the effects of social networking. We fit this with Richard
Dyers theory of entertainment and how intense highs and lows effect
the audience; drug dealing/using being part of the low points in the
characters life.
After research and from personal opinion, I like the sense of knowing what
is going to happen in a film as it’s a form of achievement, however,
surprises are also shown to intrigue viewers into a film therefore we
combined typical horror film stereotypes as well as subverting them.

3. HOW ANCILLARY TEXTS PLEASE AUDIENCES
When advertising a film, it is extremely important when wanting to reach out to
your targeted audience. Examples of reaching out to your specific audience
are posters being distributed to local places such as near colleges and
schools for 15/18 rated films. Therefore posters and radio trailers both fit
with our rating of 15 as they will be seen and heard by this audience.
Our group discussed ways we could hint the genre to our audience without
giving away spoilers or too much information as our film includes a plot
twist. To do this, we had to embed various conventions of horror into both
our ancillary texts.
Our research began by looking at different film posters and analaysing how they
convey horror with out giving away the storyline. We also looked at details
such as age ratings and taglines to appeal to the audience and draw them in.
For example, our tagline 'Who will make the final move?' on our poster and at
the end of our radio trailer, shows the audience that someone is going to
attack, but we don’t know who which is important when trying to intrigue the
audience into watching the film as they want to find out who made the final
move.
I then did some research into radio trailers and what are involved in them. Added
research included how not to give away spoilers in our trailer which we
incorporated into our trailer. We added intense parts from our film such as
our protagonist screaming and shouting to set the tone and genre, while
entwining spooky music underneath to emphasise this further.
Throughout our ancillary texts, we tried to hint and suggest to the audience
without giving away too much information, linking to the plot twist in out final
film.
4. POSTER
In my individual film poster, I wanted to capture a sense of horror
and danger therefore I used typical horror conventions such as
a black and white effect, bold red text and the image of the
antagonist, looking very threatening.
When creating this poster, it gave me tips on when creating a final
group poster such as what fonts look the most appealing and
what effects are the most effective for our genre.
I created my poster on Adobe Photoshop which I found very simple
and stress-free due to using it at school for media projects.
Our final poster was very different to my individual poster however
still conveyed the same horror genre. The final poster focused
more on details such as ratings and where the film could be
found on social networking sites which will appeal to our
targeted audience. I believe the ratings help the film appeal to
viewers of the poster as they see others opinions and therefore
conform to others opinions resulting in them going to see the
film to see if they’re right.

6. RADIO TRAILER
We created a radio trailer by combining music, dialouge from our
film and a voice over on Final Cut express. Using a Zoom
Recorder meant that it was very quick and easy for us to create
the radio trailer in one day and get it uploaded to YouTube
straight away.
Our radio trailer is very effective in the sense that it didn’t reveal to
much detailed information to the audience and how it includes
tension building through the use of dark music and a deep
voice for our voice over. We do this in the trailer to give the
audience a sense of fear by including dialogue 'No go away!
What do you want?’ and diagetic noises of the killer knocking
on the door to entice and engage listeners and to give the trailer
a dramatic effect.
The trailer will be listened by many therefore we didn’t want to
give too much away, so we focused on the details of where the
film could be consumed, the date etc. This works well with our
main product as it creates mystery which all our film is about.

7. CONCLUSION
Overall, I think our two ancillary tasks compliment the main
product greatly. I believe they have shown our creativity and
determination into getting them just right for the specific
genre.
Creativity was shown throughout as we had to try and entice our
audience both visually and aurally. The radio trailer was
difficult to start with as I had never had experience with
making one before or experience in combining various
sounds.
