Traditional literacies involve reading and writing language symbolically, while new literacies involve using digital tools to create meaning from images, sounds, and multimedia. New literacies are important because they change how meaning is created and shared, empowering more people. For citizenship and everyday life in a globalized world, it is important that everyone has the opportunity to learn new literacies skills like advocating, navigating ambiguity, and using multimodal tools, so they can fully participate in society and the workforce. Teachers should integrate identity and multiliteracies into lessons, and design co-learning experiences with students.
