Rural Scots moved south to English cities or emigrated overseas in search of better living conditions and opportunities. Many young people left, taking their skills with them. At the same time, immigrants arrived in Scotland, including Irish fleeing the potato famine, and Jews and Eastern Europeans fleeing religious and political persecution. Scotland was seen as a temporary stopping point by some groups on their way to other lands like America.

survey includes environmental, religious, and political/ideological impulses which form the
history of architecture. While examining the major movements within their socio-cultural
contexts, emphasis is placed on terminology and concepts relating to construction, style, and
significant innovations. No prior art classes or experiences are required.

ARTH220 History of World Architecture is a survey of world architecture. Students will learn to
examine, write about, and interpret major works of architecture from throughout the world.
Topics will begin with the fundamental terminology for examining architecture and then
proceed to build on the foundations, with an introduction to materials and techniques, and
then progress to an exploration of complex thought and ideas behind architects’ motivations
and their completed projects.

- 1. New Higher History Course structure & assessment
- 2. Structure and coverage of the Course assessment • The Course assessment will consist of two Components: a question paper and an assignment. • The question paper will have 60 marks. • This question paper has three Sections with the following mark allocations: • Section 1: Historical Study: Scottish (20 marks). • Section 2: Historical Study: British (20 marks). • Section 3: Historical Study: European and World (20 marks). • Within each Section are a number of Parts. You have a choice of which Part to answer. You need only answer one Part within each Section.
- 3. • Section 1: Historical Study: Scottish • This will have 20 marks. The Section will be made up of extended response questions aka (the Source Questions) • In this Section there will be three questions each of which will address one of the three source-handling skills: • Evaluate the usefulness of a source (6 marks) • How fully does a source address an issue (9 marks) • Compare the views of two sources on an issue (5 marks)
- 4. The Essays • In the British and the European and World Sections (20 marks each) there will be a choice of three open questions (per section) requiring you to explain how a historical issue has been analysed and to come to a reasoned conclusion on the issue based on how has been analysed.
- 5. The Extended Essay – (Assignment) - 30 marks • You will: • identify a historical issue which invites debate and argument • research and investigate the historical issue, using a range of sources of information • draw on and apply knowledge and understanding to analyse the causes and/or impact of the historical issue • analyse, evaluate and synthesise information in a structured manner • refer to relevant historical sources • identify different perspectives and/or points of view • structure information and present a well-reasoned conclusion supported by evidence
- 6. How will my work be marked and by whom? • Question paper • This question paper will be set and marked by SQA, you will complete this in 2 hours and 20 minutes. • The Extended Essay • The research and write up will take place under my supervision but your final product (essay) will be sent to the SQA for marking. • The production of evidence for assessment will be conducted: • within 1 hour and 30 minutes • with the use of specified resources (A4 resource sheet) • in time to meet a submission date set by SQA • independently by the learner • when the learner is ready
