New Colonies John Wheelwright – followed Williams’ example – 1638 leads a group north 1679 – New Hampshire becomes independent of Massachusetts
With growth comes new problems As settlers expand onto Native American lands, their trading partners become their enemies. 1636 – Fight between Massachusetts and the Pequot ends in the killing of hundreds of Pequot. 1675 – New England vs. Wampanoag King Philip’s War (Metacomet) Though 100s of New Englanders are killed, the war ends in Wampanoag defeat.
