There are four method of using computers.
1- Stand alone.
Computer works only with itself
2- Peer to Peer Network
Computers are linked
3- Client Server Network
Computers have a neutral server
4- Cloud network.
Computers all link to a common website.
3. Why network in the schools
Networking in the schools is beneficial to
administrators, teachers, and students.
It allows for data to be stored in a neutral
location that can be accessed on any
computer in the network.
It allows for ways to have a secure network.
It allows for ease of sharing documents and
software between teachers.
4. What can we do on a network in
schools?
Collaborative learning.
Interdisciplinary learning
Virtual guest speakers
Community based research
Email groups
Professional development
Sharing of schedules and lessons
Sharing of hardware
Communication between teachers and
administrators
5. What do we need to network?
Two areas need to be addressed for needs
1- Hardware needs
This includes server, computers, other
hardware including wiring, wireless access
2- Usage needs
Bandwidth and storage
8. Steps to building a successful
network
1- Learning
Become familiar with basic networking
ideas and terminology. Educate yourself
on networking. Find out other issue like
funding, building codes, appropriate
use, take classes, talk to other
professionals.
9. 2- Planning
A plan will be needed to implement a
successful network. There are several
parts of planning a network. These
include usage needs, policies and
procedures, storage needs, software
needs, and management needs.
10. Why do we as teachers need to
understand networking?
Networking is part of our everyday world.
Just about every aspect of our job is
affected by networking. A few that we use
daily
1- Phones
2- Attendence
3- Grades
4- Documents we save and use
5- Email
11. We may not get into the nuts and bolts of
networking, but it does help us to be
educated in how it works. We want our
computers to work when we want, how
fast we want, and the way we want.
Understanding networking helps us to
utilize it better, but also understand and
troubleshoot when things aren't working
so well.
12. We also may need to be a part of
curriculum, software, budget, and
technology committees. Understanding
how networking works will help us be
better use to our schools and help on the
committees we are assigned too.
Example: We may want a particular
software. By understanding
networking, we may be able to use it in
more classes, thus making it more

Networking is a valuable piece of our school
system. We use it daily. Our jobs would
be increasing difficult without it. By having
a basic understanding of networking, we
can make better choices, use the system
to our advantage, and be more patient
when things don't work so well.
