Nelson Mandela is a renowned South African leader who fought against apartheid and became the first black president of South Africa. He was imprisoned for 27 years for his opposition to apartheid but was released in 1990. Mandela then worked to end apartheid through peaceful means and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize before being elected president in 1994, the first black person to hold that office in South Africa. Even in retirement, Mandela continues to advocate internationally for human rights.
