Neil Armstrong was an American astronaut and the first person to walk on the moon. He was born in 1930 in Ohio and began taking flying lessons at age 15. After studying aeronautical engineering, he joined NASA in 1958. On the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon and Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the lunar surface. Astronauts wear pressurized space suits that weigh 130 kg and cost $12 million to protect them in the low gravity environment of space. They eat and drink dehydrated, packaged foods and powders that are added to water before consumption.
