Examination of some neck masses may allow determination of cause based on location, size, and consistency, but additional tests are often required. Changes in skin could indicate cancer. Persistent ear pain or pain with swallowing may indicate throat growth. Imaging like MRI, CT scan, PET and ultrasound help evaluate masses, with MRI best for soft tissues and CT scan useful for bone involvement. Biopsy through fine needle aspiration is often needed to confirm diagnosis before considering treatment options like medical management, surgery or radiation therapy.
