This document discusses potential solutions for estimating methane emissions from coal mine ventilation shafts in Poland. It provides background information on coal mining activity and methane emissions in the Upper Silesia Coal Basin region. Specifically, it details methane concentration and release rate data from 2021 for 13 ventilation shafts operated by JSW coking coal company. The document proposes installing new measurement devices like tunable diode laser spectrometers at the shafts to provide real-time methane measurements with high accuracy over long periods in order to precisely quantify methane emissions from these large point sources. The goal is to estimate emissions with uncertainties better than 0.02 tonnes per hour on a 24-hour basis.
