Singapore has been recycling water since 1974 through its NEWater program to reduce reliance on imported water from Malaysia. There are currently five operational NEWater factories that produce recycled water, with the first two opening in 2002 and additional plants opening in 2004 and 2007. The existing NEWater factories have a total daily capacity of around 20 million gallons, with about 6% of that used for indirect potable purposes to supplement Singapore's daily potable water needs of 300 million gallons.
