After completing his Engineering in Electronics and Communications, Vizag boy Naveen
Kumar made his way to Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies to pursue the
reputed management program. He was keen on a career in Sales and wanted to get a
head-start in the lucrative corporate world. The PGDM Batch 2015 -17 student is thrilled
that his dreams have come true not only because he has been placed with a reputed name
like Airtel but also in the industry and job profile of his choice. Here is his story.
Giving placements his best shot
Naveen reveals that first round of Airtel placements took place in a campus pool recruitment
drive in Bangalore. Working in the dynamic Telecommunications industry was his number 1
priority, so he began his prep in the right earnest. “I started with preparing for the Aptitude
test and reading as much as I could on the current trends in the industry. I made the most of
resources in the library, read newspapers to brush up my knowledge,” he says.
Able support from faculty team
According to Naveen, KIAMS offered students various platforms to gain domain knowledge.
Role plays, case studies, assignments ensured that he understood the world of Marketing
and Sales inside out. Faculty members played their part and made things easier every step
of the way. “I could talk to the faculty members beyond classroom. We would talk about
everything, from marketing concepts to career guidance, which enabled me to take the right
decision,” he admits.
Industry exposure offered valuable insights
2. There are many things that KIAMS does differently to offer students the cutting edge
advantage. The unique four month long summer internship gives them the desired exposure
and industry interaction sessions inspires students. “Experts day out where industry
veterans shared their experience with us was an enriching experience. I feel I also benefited
from the healthy relationship with the alumni. It helped me look at the bigger picture and
motivated me,” he adds.
Building on the college communications
Naveen was the Cultural Representative during his stint at KIAMS. It was a huge learning
experience for him as he had to interact with other teams and negotiate with the
management for budgets. He explains the practical learning from the initiatives as he says,
“Sales is all about leadership, people management and negotiation skills. Through different
extracurricular initiatives at KIAMS I developed strong communication skills, which are
always handy.”
What lies next?
As he is set to take on the role as Key Account Manager for Airtel Corporate business,
Naveen agrees that KIAMS has met his expectations both professionally and personally.
Now it’s up to him to scale greater heights of professional success. “I will have to deal with
corporate companies in Bangalore. I will be working in B2B sales, which is a great profile for
a sales manager to start with. I can’t wait to make my mark with the company,” he ends
confidently.
