2. Natural Birth Control Advantages and
Disadvantages
• ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
• Natural methods are typically very inexpensive
compared to other methods of birth control unless a
woman chooses to purchase ovulation test kits.
• It can be difficult to estimate or know precisely when
a woman is fertile, allowing increased chances for
unplanned conception.
• A woman does not need to take medication or use
hormonal manipulation. • Natural methods are not as effective as some forms
of contraception.
• No procedures or fittings by a physician are
required. • Ovulation test kits are used by some couples using
natural methods of contraception, and the cost of
these kits is another potential disadvantage.
• Being unable to have intercourse at certain times of
the month is a disadvantage for some women.
3. Withdrawal Method
Using the withdrawal method, the man withdraws his penis from a
woman's vagina before he ejaculates so that the sperm released
from his penis does not enter her vagina.
Using the withdrawal method for birth control requires self-
control. Even then, the withdrawal method isn't an especially
effective form of birth control. Sperm may enter the vagina if
withdrawal isn't properly timed or if pre-ejaculation fluid contains
sperm. The withdrawal method doesn't offer protection from
sexually transmitted infections.
4. Mucus Inspection Method
The mucus inspection method depends on the presence or absence of a particular type of cervical mucus that
a woman produces in response to estrogen. A woman will generate larger amounts of more watery mucus
than usual (like raw egg white) just before release of an egg from her ovary. This egg-white cervical mucus
stretches for up to an inch when pulled apart.
5. Ovulation Test Method
Ovulation tests work by detecting a search surge of the luteinizing hormone also known as LH. During
your menstrual cycle your body only produces a small amount of LH, but the LH surge indicates the
release of the ovum from the ovary.
6. Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM)
It allows women to safely rely on breastfeeding as a family planning method. Based on research, the
method uses three measures of a woman's fertility: 1) the return of menstrual period, 2) breastfeeding
pattern, and 3) the time postpartum.
LAM can be used if:
1. Menstrual period has not returned since delivery
2. Breastfeeding her baby on demand, day and night
3. Baby is less than six months old.
7. Calendar Method
Calendar based contraceptive methods prevent pregnancy by monitoring the fertile periods during the
menstrual cycle.
Avoid unprotected sexual intercourse between days 8-19 of the menstrual cycle, as this is the period of
fertility. Provides contraceptive protection which is effective between days 1-7 of the menstrual cycle,
and from day 20 to the commencement of next period of menstrual bleeding.
8. Douching and Urination Method
Vaginal douching is the use of a liquid solution to wash out mucus and other types of bodily debris
from a woman's vagina. Many women choose to make regular douching a part of their routine for
maintaining vaginal hygiene.
Regardless of whether a woman does it for hygienic reasons, vaginal douching does not work as a
contraception method. During intercourse, active sperm can reach a woman's cervix and even the
upper part of her uterus within five minutes of ejaculation.
9. Symptothermal Method
Combines the cervical mucus and Basal Body Temperature method. The woman takes her temperature daily,
watching for the rise in temperature that marks ovulation. She also analyzes her cervical mucus every day and
observes for other signs of ovulation midcycle abdominal pain.
The couple must abstain from coitus until 3 days after the rise in temperature or the fourth day after the peak
of mucus change.
10. Abstinence Method
Refraining from sexual relations, has a theoretical 0%
failure rate and is almost the most effective way to
prevent STIs.
Periodic abstinence is another method to avoid
pregnancy by avoiding sex on the days a woman may
conceive. The methods for determining the days when a
woman may conceive are under the "Fertility awareness
method".
