Powhatan, Lakota and Pueblo Tribes
Powhatan
Region
• The Powhatan tribe lived in the Eastern Woodlands. The Eastern
Woodlands region is made up of rivers, hills, mountains, and
coastline.
Homes
• They lived in longhouses which
were made from trees and bark.
There is a hole in the roof to let
the smoke out.
Transportation
• Walking and paddling canoes
was their main form of
transportation.
Occupation
• They were hunters, fisherman,
and farmers. They mostly
hunted deer and used all parts
of the deer for food, clothing,
and tools.
Lakota
Region
• The Lakota lived in the Plains
region. The land in the Plains
region was made up of prairies,
plains, and rolling hills. There
were few trees and the land was
mostly flat. The environment
had hot summers, and cold,
harsh winters.
Homes
• The Lakota lived in teepees. They
were nomadic and followed the
buffalo; so they needed a home
that was easy to take down and
put up.
Transportation
• The Lakota traveled by walking.
Later, the Spanish brought
horses to the Plains and the
Lakota became horsemen.
Occupation
• The Lakota were hunters,
horsemen, and warriors. They
mostly hunted buffalo and used
every part of the buffalo for
food, clothing, shelter and tools.
Pueblo
Region
• The Pueblo lived in the
Southwest region. The land in
the Plains region is made up of
high flatlands. The Southwest
has hot days, cool nights, and
little rainfall.
Homes
• The Pueblo lived in multi-storied
terraced buildings. The houses
were made from adobe, or clay.
Transportation
• They traveled by walking.
Occupation
• They were hunters and farmers.
