1. “ Opposites/ Binary Oppositions” These Opposites Such as Night/Day, Good/Bad, Light/Dark Tended to structure text such as stories, plays and films as well. Claude’s theory relates to many of the films our group analyzed but he prime example is “The sixth Sense”. The Black Background with the white writing over lapping it give the effect of opposites. Used in terms of good vs. bad/ Good vs. Evil. Claude Levi Strauss “Negotiated Meaning Between institution and audience” In use of flashbacks and the use of past experience. When we analyzed the films we saw this theory in films such as “chainsaw massacre” and “Valentine” When we see flashbacks and previous experiences Rolande Barthes
2. Todorov’s theory can be applied to some of the analysed films, the main stage of Todorov’s theory that can be applied especially to the opening of films is the stage of equilibrium, in some cases you could also see the second stage which is the disruption of equilibrium. A prime example of Todorov’s theory is the shining where equilibrium seems to be reached in two was one is though the scenery of the mountains terrain which doesn't seem to give much away about the story and give the film a calm start also thought the colour of the titling which is blue a very natural colour compared to other films which seem to use colours such as red and black as we the audience also see disruption of equilibrium in misery when the equilibrium is created by scenery but is disrupted by the car crash.
