A presentation I gave at NagiosKonferenz in Nuremberg in October, 2007. Here I discussed using Nagios as a framework for hardware-based monitoring and the necessary community interactions between proprietary hardware vendors and the open source Nagios community.

Datasys ELISA log management is robust, powerful, yet inexpensive solution for collection, correlation and analysis of logs. Core system consists of the Elasticsearch “noSQL“ database and the web user interface Kibana, which provides high comfort for analysis of detected security incidents and relevant logs. It is common that the database ElasticSearch is distributed to multiple servers to achieve load balancing and high availability of indexed data. ELISA heavily utilizes ZABBIX for user authentication and role based access control, notifications and self-monitoring. Elasticsearch Indices can be managed right in ZABBIX Frontend. ZABBIX "trapper" items and monitoring templates are used to centrally manage configuration of distributed environment of NXlog agents. Agents are capable to securely auto-register as ZABBIX "hosts".
Bringing DevOps to Routing with evolved XR: an overview
A session in the DevNet Zone at Cisco Live, Berlin. This session is a fresh perspective on the routing world, focused on the growing influence of DevOps style workflows in routing deployments across Web scale service providers. With the adoption of a 64-bit linux OS, support for Linux containers (LXC/Docker) and an open architecture that enables automated configuration management off the bat, the evolution of IOS-XR has placed it right in the midst of DevOps and SDN. In this session we dive deep into the application-hosting infrastructure, Modular software delivery techniques and support for zero touch provisioning and configuration management tools that integrate seamlessly with the M2M interfaces exposed by IOS XR. We look at deployment techniques of web scale service providers that is gradually influencing the rest of the market and introduce a variety of use cases around automated NetOps, traffic-engineering, Telemetry and data-center cluster schedulers that showcase the power of an open, automatable network operating system.

The Art of Decomposing Monoliths - Kfir Bloch, Wix
Kfir Bloch discusses considerations for decomposing monolithic applications into microservices at Wix. He outlines four main reasons for decomposing: 1) to isolate resources for high availability, 2) to support different release cycles, 3) to reuse and share logic, and 4) to have single team responsibility over services. Bloch also discusses mitigations for challenges like partial deployments and increased failure points. He emphasizes starting the decomposition gradually and monitoring services from the beginning.

Breaking the Monolith: Organizing Your Team to Embrace Microservices
Microservices are becoming an increasingly popular way to build software systems. Thanks to evangelism from companies like Netflix, Amazon, Gilt, ThoughtWorks and SoundCloud, more organizations are considering whether or not they should adopt this practice.
In this talk, I’ll discuss our experiences evolving 500px from a single, monolithic Ruby on Rails application to a series of composable microservices written in Ruby and Go. I’ll talk about the challenges we faced from a business, engineering, QA and operations perspective and how moving to microservices encouraged (or required) change in our organizational structure and culture.
In this talk, you’ll learn how a change in how we develop software affected team structures, development environments, testing infrastructure and encouraged us to explore moving to cloud hosting and to move closer to continuous delivery. You’ll also learn about the pitfalls, both expected and unexpected that we experienced along the way.
By sharing some of our experiences, I hope to provide some guidance to engineering teams considering whether or not to adopt microservices.

A Network Engineer's Approach to Automation
This document introduces Junos PyEZ, an open-source micro-framework for network automation using Python. It is designed for network engineers who want to automate tasks but may not have extensive programming experience. Junos PyEZ provides Python-based access to Juniper device configuration and operational data without requiring knowledge of XML or CLI screen-scraping. KURMA - A Containerized Container Platform - KubeCon 2016
Kurma is a container runtime that is based on the container instrumentation built into the Apcera Platform. Kurma, and its accompanied “KurmaOS” is our vision of a lightweight, fully containerized operating system.
This presentation will cover Apcera’s journey in its container
instrumentation. Beginning with the pre-Docker landscape, how it grew over the course of 3+ years, and the “next-gen” adaption of it, where the base container instrumentation has been adapted to stand on its own, and growing it to be used beyond just Apcera’s own usage.
Kurma incorporates a lot of lessons learned with both development and operations of a container platform, including building modular vs monolith, extensibility being built in vs built on, and managing a cluster of hosts and containers.
We’ll also cover our experiences with introducing it to Kubernetes as another first class runtime provider. Taking how Kurma works and have it work with Kubernetes, and how we’d like to see Kubernetes grow in some of the areas we see Kurma growing.

Netflix Cloud Architecture and Open Source
Netflix has over 109 million members and uses over 500 microservices running on 100,000 virtual machines across 3 regions to stream over 100 million hours of content per day. Netflix open sources many of its cloud projects to improve engineering, recruit talent, and align with industry standards. Some of Netflix's notable open source projects include Chaos Monkey for testing high availability, Spinnaker for continuous delivery, and Security Monkey for monitoring security policies. While Netflix's cloud architecture and security practices were discussed, areas like big data, data persistence, UI engineering, personalization algorithms, and studio applications were not covered.
A Tale of Two String Representations
Strings are used pervasively in Ruby. If we can make them faster, we can make many apps faster.
In this talk, I will be introducing ropes: an immutable tree-based data structure for implementing strings. While an old idea, ropes provide a new way of looking at string performance and mutability in Ruby. I will describe how we replaced a byte array-oriented string representation with a rope-based one in JRuby+Truffle. Then we’ll look at how moving to ropes affects common string operations, its immediate performance impact, and how ropes can have cascading performance implications for apps.

KURMA - A Containerized Container Platform - KubeCon 2016
Kurma is a container runtime that is based on the container instrumentation built into the Apcera Platform. Kurma, and its accompanied “KurmaOS” is our vision of a lightweight, fully containerized operating system.
This presentation will cover Apcera’s journey in its container
instrumentation. Beginning with the pre-Docker landscape, how it grew over the course of 3+ years, and the “next-gen” adaption of it, where the base container instrumentation has been adapted to stand on its own, and growing it to be used beyond just Apcera’s own usage.
Kurma incorporates a lot of lessons learned with both development and operations of a container platform, including building modular vs monolith, extensibility being built in vs built on, and managing a cluster of hosts and containers.
We’ll also cover our experiences with introducing it to Kubernetes as another first class runtime provider. Taking how Kurma works and have it work with Kubernetes, and how we’d like to see Kubernetes grow in some of the areas we see Kurma growing.

A Tale of Two String Representations
Strings are used pervasively in Ruby. If we can make them faster, we can make many apps faster.
In this talk, I will be introducing ropes: an immutable tree-based data structure for implementing strings. While an old idea, ropes provide a new way of looking at string performance and mutability in Ruby. I will describe how we replaced a byte array-oriented string representation with a rope-based one in JRuby+Truffle. Then we’ll look at how moving to ropes affects common string operations, its immediate performance impact, and how ropes can have cascading performance implications for apps.

Thesis Presentation
The document discusses a study evaluating different user feedback systems for search engines. It describes previous work using implicit and explicit user feedback to improve search result relevance. The study collected both voluntary and mandatory feedback from users in controlled and uncontrolled search scenarios. Decision trees were built from the collected data and showed that voluntary feedback systems achieved higher classification accuracy than mandatory systems, supporting the hypothesis that voluntary feedback is higher quality.
Selenium Grid
Selenium Grid allows maintaining a cluster of Selenium RC servers, configuring tests for different environments, and parallelizing tests. It works by having a Grid Hub that manages Selenium Grid Nodes, which each run a Selenium RC Server. The Hub maps environment names like "linux_firefox_3_6" to specific browsers, and clients connect using environment names. This allows the Hub to route clients to available Nodes matching the requested environment.

Nagios is a monitoring tool with a primary emphasis on network-based software services. Modern datacenters, however, have many different types of equipment and services to monitor, many of which Nagios cannot support out of the box. For example, Nagios has no means of determining whether or not a node is actually powered on or not. We show how Nagios can be used as a framework for hardware-based monitoring of services and equipment. As a motivating example, we discuss the design and development of a series of plugins for the Servprise WebReboot line of products. Through the example, we show how Nagios can be used to integrate third-party products with an existing network monitoring deployment with minimal impact on existing infrastructure.

Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
