The NADC was established in 1994 to improve diabetes care standards through specialist centres. It aims to promote collaboration and information sharing between centres, link them to non-specialist providers, collect data to improve care standards, and help centres maintain excellence. There are currently 64 member centres in Australia that are classified as Tertiary, Care, or Affiliate centres based on their services and staffing. The NADC conducts the Australian National Diabetes Audit to benchmark centres and drive quality improvement. It also holds Best Practice meetings and provides diabetes management training. Current projects include implementing a clinical database and developing an accreditation system for centres of excellence.
