Supporting Hadoop in containers takes much more than the very primitive support Docker provides using the Storage Plugin. A production scale Hadoop deployment inside containers needs to honor anti/affinity, fault-domain and data-locality policies. Kubernetes alone, with primitives such as StatefulSets and PersitentVolumeClaims, is not sufficient to support a complex data-heavy application such as Hadoop. One needs to think about this problem more holistically across containers, networking and storage stacks. Also, constructs around deployment, scaling, upgrade etc in traditional orchestration platforms is designed for applications that have adopted a microservices philosophy, which doesn't fit most Big Data applications across the ingest, store, process, serve and visualization stages of the pipeline. national data cyberinfrastructure supporting access to data
repositories for NASA SMD missions. A comparison with best-of-
breed practices within NASA and at other Federal agencies should
be made.
♦ We request a briefing on this review to a joint meeting of the NAC IT
Infrastructure, Science, and Education committees within one year of
this recommendation. The briefing should contain recommendations
for a NASA data-intensive cyberinfrastructure to support science
discovery by both mission teams, remote researchers, and for
education and public outreach appropriate to the growth driven by
current and future SMD missions.

Editor's Notes
Many of the experimental and research products SPoRT provides are intend for use in a decision support system of a specific end user (e.g. AWIPS for the NWS). Some SPoRT products are also available in image (picture) form on the SPoRT web page, or in specific formats on public HTML or FTP sites. There is an increasing desire for access to SPoRT products by end users that are outside the NWS, including Agencies involved in responding to natural and man made disasters. This is being facilitated by the use of open source data formats and tools to serve data and products in a more useful way. The image to the right presents a screen shot of a web-based tiled mapping service recently developed to provide NASA data and products to the emergency management community for Hurricane Sandy. Any computer running Javascript with internet access can access this data and use the tool to examine the disaster area. Access to these data resources by responders and emergency management decision makers in the field is key to providing the best possible us of the data. A prototype “app” for the IPhone and Android supported devices is shown below.
SPoRT has been proactive in the use of NASA data and research technologies to support disaster response activities. Most recently the low light level band of the VIIRS instrument on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite (called the Day Night Band, or DNB) has been used to monitor power restoration in the wake of the destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy last month. The low light channel senses reflected moonlight from clouds and surface features and also detects emission from light sources such as lights from cities and towns, ships, and evening fires burning on the ground. The VIIRS DNB image from (August 31, 2012) the month before the hurricane hit the region shows the glowing lights from the cities along this portion of the East Coast of the U.S. The next image of the same region on November 4 th , a few days after Hurricane Sandy devastated the region shows a significant reduction in light coming from the cities, particularly on Long Island and the New Jersey coastal area. SPoRT has further refined this data, combining the before and after imagery into a red-green-blue composite image to highlight the regions where power (lights) have not returned as of November 4 th (shown in yellow). White colors represent regions where power (lights) were on in both before and after images. The blue colors indicate features present in the after image but nor before. SPoRT continuously made a suite of products available to the USGS data based used by emergency management agencies to support relief efforts. The image on the right highlights the use of our products by the Army’s Northern Command (responsible for coordinating ground support relief efforts for Sandy) to create their own value added product to monitor power recovery in the region.
In summary, access to and use of high performance computational resources and advanced dissemination and visualization methods have helped SPoRT successfully transition experimental and research data to the operational weather community.
SPoRT has been an early user of “cloud” resources for a number of different applications. These configurable systems provide additional computer resources that can be leveraged to support specific projects or continuous ongoing projects. SPoRT developed and demonstrated various applications of cloud resources using both the NASA Code I Private Cloud and Amazon cloud capabilities. In the example at the right, a tailored configuration of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model for applications in Mesoamerican (in support of the SERVIR project) is run daily with output disseminated to the SERVIR Web Mapping Service for access by their user community. The example shows a 6 hour precipitation forecast from August 28 when Hurricane Isaac was bearing down on the Gulf Coast region. NASA cloud resources were also used to support the tornado damage track analysis following the April 27, 2011 Southeast U.S. tornado outbreak (lower left image). While most of Northern Alabama was without power for 10 days following the tornados, SPoRT scientists supported local NWS forecast offices in helping to identify regions damaged by tornados with high resolution satellite imagery by processing large volumes of satellite data in the cloud. The link highlights a blog post on the activity.
There is a continuing need for the development of new visualization capabilities for NASA satellite data in support of various SPoRT activities. In its new Visualization and Collaboration Lab (VCL), a multi-display hyperwall is being installed to facilitate these new capabilities. The hyperwall will not only be used for display of scientific results, but will enable new scientific discovery through the use on interactive display capabilities. The hyperwall in the VCL will be used to support various SPoRT end user training activities and product development workshops hosted by SPoRT. It will also serve as an operations center for disaster response and support.
