A modern approach for wiring the smart world (A.Rossi).pptxFIWARE
Join and fire walk with us to unravel the secrets of how a world made of Digital Twins living in the cloud-to-edge continuum can be implemented with FIWARE components, relying on the NGSI-LD standard, and get insight into real Digital Twin use cases.
Digital Twins enable system integration at multiple levels and are a core FIWARE concept. Participants will be able to see how an NGSI-LD based Digital Twin system can get its capabilities incrementally increased. The status and the roadmap of NGSI-LD in ETSI ISG CIM will be presented, including work on recent additions for operations in distributed deployments, how Asset Administration Shell (AAS) concepts from Industry 4.0 or Linked Data Event Stream functions can be supported.
Participants will discover also how to connect Digital Twins using Linked Open Data compliant with the FIWARE Smart Data Models. It includes a scenario for harvesting data from external sources, making them FIWARE compatible, and publishing them as LOD in Open Data Portals.
With Digital Twins, system integration becomes a breeze, and in this session, you will also learn how different frameworks bring an overlay on top of an NGSI-LD based environment to empower non-IT specialists. Also how recipes for easy deployment and operation of FIWARE systems managing digital twin data end to end can help creation of solutions based on this paradigm.
Deel deep into the secrets of how to unleash the full potential of FIWARE, the standard-based open source framework of reference for development and integration of systems using digital twins!

SGCI - The Science Gateways Community Institute: Going Beyond BordersSandra Gesing
The Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI), opened in August 2016, provides free resources, services, experts, and ideas for creating and sustaining science gateways. It offers five areas of services to the science gateway developer and user communities: the Incubator, Extended Developer Support, the Scientific Software Collaborative, Community Engagement and Exchange, and Workforce Development. While all these areas are available to US-based communities, the Incubator, the Scientific Software Collaborative and the Community Engagement and Exchange serve also the international communities. We aim at reaching out and supporting beyond borders on international scale with diverse measures and our intent is to form and deepen collaborations with partner organizations and coalitions beneficial and/or related to the science gateways community. Research topics are independent of national borders and researchers spread worldwide can benefit from each other’s research results, software, data and from lessons learned — via online materials and publications or at international events. The gateway community has long benefitted from this type of exchange. This paper will present related work describing the benefits of international collaborations generally, and specifically as they relate to science gateways. We go into detail regarding SGCI’s ongoing work on international scale and its work planned in the near future.

A key initiative of Europe is to accelerate the deployment of Data Spaces in different domains. Manufacturing Data Spaces are among the top 9 priorities set by the EC.
Data sharing among manufacturing companies and with (service) providers will be increasing in the near future, demonstrating how sharing industrial data improves company operations. Both the discrete manufacturing and process industry are impacted by such a transformation.
Consequently, the priority for manufacturing stakeholders will be to develop collaborative services based on a trusted and common framework for sharing and exchanging data and models multilaterally to overcome the interoperability challenge and implement next generation autonomous cross-enterprise industrial operations.
Currently approaches to Digital Manufacturing Platforms (DMP) and Industrial Data Platforms (IDP) do lack the ability to consistently share data across organisations at scale. In fact, it is already acknowledged that peer-to-peer data sharing, especially when involving SMEs, will not scale to unveil high-quality data sharing for manufacturing value set above.
The FIWARE Smart Industry Mission Support Committee (SIMSC) is playing a major role in this twin and green transition, facilitating the definition and adoption of common protocol and data models, as well as the spreading of enabling technologies such as Digital Twins and Artificial Intelligence. The session will drive you through the context analysis, the needs and benefits, the technologies adoption in relevant use cases and the offering of Testing and Experimental Facilities in several industrial domains.
Science Services and Science Platforms: Using the Cloud to Accelerate and Dem...Ian Foster
Ever more data- and compute-intensive science makes computing increasingly important for research. But for advanced computing infrastructure to benefit more than the scientific 1%, we need new delivery methods that slash access costs, new sustainability models beyond direct research funding, and new platform capabilities to accelerate the development of new, interoperable tools and services.
The Globus team has been working towards these goals since 2010. We have developed software-as-a-service methods that move complex and time-consuming research IT tasks out of the lab and into the cloud, thus greatly reducing the expertise and resources required to use them. We have demonstrated a subscription-based funding model that engages research institutions in supporting service operations. And we are now also showing how the platform services that underpin Globus applications can accelerate the development and use of an integrated ecosystem of advanced science applications, such as NCAR’s Research Data Archive and OSG Connect, thus enabling access to powerful data and compute resources by many more people than is possible today.
In this talk, I introduce Globus services and the underlying Globus platform. I present representative applications and discuss opportunities that this platform presents for both small science and large facilities.

Semantic Web technologies, both those envisaged and those already realised, have the potential to benefit domains where issues such as volume, complexity and heterogeneity can overcome traditional techniques. Sensor networks are one such area where the application of semantics is indicated by scale, complexity, and the need to integrate over heterogeneous standards, sensors and systems for multiple purposes and multiple disciplines.
The Semantic Sensor Networks W3C Incubator is an international initiative to develop standards for sharing information collected by sensors and sensor networks over the Web, including an ontology for different types of sensing devices and their observations, and new approaches for the semantic markup of sensor descriptions and services that support sensor data exchange and sensor network management.
Kerry will describe the ongoing effort to increase the quality and reduce the cost of capturing environmental data, to address the growing demand for information about the environmental systems that support Australia’s agricultural, resource and process-based industries.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
