When one is asked about the meaning of the word ‘X’ it
is understood to ring a scientific bell in the mind. But it
is even interesting to note that the origin of ‘X’ lies in the
Greek folklore. As per the popular folk story Zeus’s love
for nymphs (a spirit of nature imagined as a beautiful
maiden) often propelled him to visit the mountains to
meet ‘X’. Displeased and jealous, his wife Hera followed
him one day to catch him red-handed. But then ‘X’
would buy Zeus some time to escape by engaging Hera
in long conversations. Being annoyed after learning this
truth, an irate Hera cursed ‘X’ to be only able to repeat
the last words that another person just said.

own the local roads. When the logo is on navy blue, it
represents the original meaning. When it is on a white
or silver field, it indicates land. The logo in red
indicates the fiery power of the vehicles.

There are many instances in Indian freedom
movement where dramas were performed inspired
from mythology. One such play was performed in Pune
by Maharashtra Nataka Mandali. While at the literal
level, the play portrayed the last year exile of the
Pandavas at a deeper level, it sent out a strong
allegorical message, favouring the approach of the
Extremists and mocking at the pacifist approach of the
moderates.
01
The play goes like this:
The viceroy, Lord Curzon, is the demon and his
atrocities are increasing rapidly on a woman called
Bharat Mata. She is being dishonoured under foreign
oppressors. Gokhale plays the role of moderate
nationalist and his restraint to peace symbolised the
policy of the moderates. The extremists were willing to
take extreme measures to save the dignity of their
mother India. They called for violence, revolted,
successfully won the battle and got Bharat Mata back to
them.
What mythological story was this based on?
01
X was the ruler of ancient city of Sipylus. X was a very
close friend of gods and was even invited to dine and
party with them. According to a myth, he decided to
bring back nectar from divine feast to his own people to
make them immortal. When this didn't work, he
sacrificed his own son to Olympians. He was brutally
punished for his crime.
02
He was doomed to stand up to his neck in water but
could never reach it to take a sip and could never take a
bite from luscious fruits that surrounded him in the
underworld. He was eternally thirsty and hungry but just
few inches away from food and water. This has led to the
usage of a word Y which is suitable for this type of
situations.
ID Y.
02
The original name of a warrior is X. The prefix of X
was changed and resulted in new name Y which is
more popular. Few people think prefix of Y is
justifiable because it means something bad and this
warrior is known for his bad deeds. Others disagree
with this saying that the prefix means difficult and
this person is difficult to be defeated. They even cite
a sloka from Geeta to justify their reasoning.
ID X, Y and what caused this misunderstanding of
the meaning?

During 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Tej Pratap, son of Lalu
Yadav, told that he is the second Lalu. Later Misa Bharti,
the daughter, had said, 'both the brothers are equal for

Tejashwi Yadav is suitable for it."
For this, Sanjay singh from JDU said Misa is playing the
role of X here due to her words above.
