Prelims Round

Good Bye Lenin! is a critically acclaimed German tragicomedy film released in 2003, centered
around the political scenario of Germany in the late 20th century. The story follows the
dynamics of a family located in East Germany (GDR), where the mother, Christiane, who is
devoted to the socialist cause, suffers a stroke and goes into an eight-month coma.
Meanwhile, the Peaceful Revolution takes place in Germany, merging the eastern and
western parts of the nation. On awakening from the coma, the doctor warns the family that
any shocking news could cause Christiane to have a fatal heart attack. So, her children make
an elaborate arrangement to set up the conditions of GDR around them and telecast fake
news in attempts to conceal the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communism in
Germany. The plot of this movie has been adapted into several Indian films, along with a
Telugu version X, loosely based on the same, whose release was believed to provide good
relief to the Tollywood box office, which had reportedly suffered losses for some time then.

Audience commented about the step taken by the director and the producer on the movie X as
the late 90s era was totally focused on the commercial movies. But this movie faced all these
things and stood as one of the classic movie running for 100 days in two centres and also
winning many Nandi, Filmfare and National Awards. Coming to casting, one particular main
character was given to Y. People, after watching the movie, felt like he is the only person who
can do such characters after Sr.NTR. When director approached him for this, Y felt it as a joke
but finally he was taken for that character. During the 8 months shooting for this movie, Y spent
all his time in reading and understanding the character and he spent minimal time with family.
He also followed few rules such as sleeping on floor, eating only vegetarian food, etc.. during
the film shooting. He was appreciated for his excellent acting in this role and also the make-up
artists have to be specially mentioned for making Y look that great in this movie.

movie makers' hypocrisy can be clearly seen at the fag end of the movie when there is a "holy"
