Myocardial diseases can be caused by drugs like anti-cancer medications, infections from viruses or bacteria, and autoimmune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus. There are several types of myocarditis defined by their morphology and inflammatory infiltrates, including lymphocytic, hypersensitivity, and giant cell myocarditis which are characterized by lymphocytes, macrophages, eosinophils or giant cells respectively. Myxomas are soft, gelatinous polypoid tumors of the heart that contain an abundant myxoid matrix, low cellularity and numerous small blood vessels.
