Eumycetoma is a chronic fungal infection of the foot that develops through a break in the skin. It is caused by fungi such as Madurella mycetomatis. There are two types of mycetoma - actinomycetoma caused by bacteria and eumycetoma caused by fungi. Eumycetoma progresses more slowly than actinomycetoma and causes coarse black or brown grains. Diagnosis involves identifying the causative agent by examining grains discharged from the skin under microscopy and attempting to culture the organism.
