scientific network - Fundamental changes for scientific
publishing on their way with Open Access
MyScienceWork the start-up featuring a unique Open Access social network
for researchers with offices in Luxembourg and Paris, is confident to create
the world biggest scientific database thus providing enhanced accessibility
to scientists worldwide.
Through its centralized multidisciplinary communication platform, MyScienceWork provides
open access to scientific data: new publications of researches, expert profiles, job offers and
scientific conferences and events. By the end of the year, the company is targeting to reach
100.000 subscribers to its social network. Within the last three months 15.000 scientists
signed up to the MyScienceWork platform which provides access to 23 million documents
published in 39 languages. The social network is based on the Open Access concept,
providing researchers and the general public free access to scientific knowledge.
Mrs Virginie Simon, CEO and co-founder of MyScienceWork, who holds a PhD in
nanotechnologies against cancer, enthuses: « scientific social networks have been proven in

still are restricted to featuring scientific data for selected disciplines only. MyScienceWork

Luxembourgish investment fund with international activities, already invested 1.5 million
USD in MyScienceWork for our launch in Europe. We feel confident that our business model

Ongoing technical development and public access to knowledge
MyScienceWork is dedicated to continuously develop its technologies in order to provide
enhanced services to professionals searching for accurate scientific findings. The MSW
search engine includes web semantics allowing searches by keywords and providing
scientific language comprehension. As a result of the continuous development of its online
platform, MyScienceWork was able to open up scientific knowledge to the general public. In
its “News” vulgarization section, expert journalists publish articles on scientific news,
researchers’ profiles, and documents dedicated to open access and science 2.0.
Fundamental changes to scientific editing on their way
MyScienceWork’s success is a consequence of the growing need for liberalisation of the
scientific information access and mainly of the free access of researchers to the publications
of their peers. According to academic experts, the volume of scientific articles read or
quotes used is multiplied by 30 when published on an Open Access platform. Ten years ago

3. researchers were not only forced to pay for the publication of their findings, but institutions
and universities were also compelled to invest high sums in scientific expert magazines and
papers. Today and with the development of scientific social networks based on Open Access,
trends to a liberalisation of scientific knowledge are fundamentally changing the editing
market.
In 2012 four winners of the 2012 Nobel Prize (John Gurdon, Shinya Yamanaka, Brian
Kobilka and Serge Haroche) chose to publish their research only in Open Access thus
providing Open Access its well-deserved excellence. An increasing number of universities
and institutions in Europe and the world amongst which MIT and Harvard University, are
supporting platforms and networks based on Open Access, forcing researchers to openly file
articles, publications and bibliographic references, allowing them to increase their impact,
visibility and the accessibility to their work. In February 2013, the White House announced
its adaptation of a policy that would see nearly all of the science papers produced through
federal funding made accessible to the public within a year of their publication. Today, the
European Commission as well as European governments are looking into providing legal
frameworks and recommendations for copyrights and free access to scientific publications.
