A leader's style is the way in which someone provides direction, implements plans and motivates
people.1 In other words, everybody has a method of leading others to accomplish a shared vision
and goal. Furthermore, understanding leadership style is vitally important for both a leader and
those under his or her leadership. For example, if a leader is a democratic leader, people's opinions
will be very important to that leader as well as lengthy discussion before a decision is made.
Therefore, those under this leader need to know that their opinion is valued and necessary. When I
first started leading at church, I was a very democratic leader until someone said, "Just tell us what
you want us to do." What they were asking for was a compelling vision and assignment. We were

This leadership style creates a great atmosphere of independence, yet over time can lead to a group
of silos within a church. Finally, I relate most to the team–building leader because after much trial
and error I have learned that it takes a team to equip the body of Christ and do it well. Therefore,

Leaders are characterized by certain traits which distinguish leaders from non–leaders includes Drive,
desire to lead, honesty, cognitive ability, self–confidence and knowledge. Effective leaders must

But it was not easy for me because this was the first time when I was chosen for the leader of a
team. I was so excited to show my leadership skills I got and I was not nervous at all despite this was
the first time that I was going to lead a team because I had seen my cousin so many times to work as
a team leader. She always used to tell me how to work in a team and how to lead in a team. She was

Ms. Corson, my second–grade teacher was a democratic leader who influenced with integrity. She
was the first to demonstrate equality and justice, in my world. She became the standard which I held
all leaders to from that point forward. As one might well imagine, that new standard led to a great
deal of disappointment and insubordination. As a young special education advocate, obsessed with
efficiency, I rarely educated parents on the legalities or processes necessary to obtain the free and
