My Journey Through Reading And Writing
My journey through reading and writing started once I started school. I don't remember the early years but they laid down a foundation for me. It
got me to where I am today. I love reading for pleasure but I want to be more open to different types of genres. I'm not the best writer but I try my best
to write well. I have a strong approach to writing an essay but when it comes to actually writing, I don't feel too confident. I hope that this year will
help me become a better reader and writer. My reading experiences have always been enjoyable. I love to read when I find an interesting book. It's
easy for me to be sucked into a book if the story catches my eye. I mostly like to read teen romance novels. They appeal to me simply because of
my interest in a love story. My parents hate buying me books because they know I'll be finished reading within a week or so. Reading has always
been really easy to me. It seems almost natural to be sucked into other worlds. The words start to flow over the pages and suddenly it feels like I'm
not even reading anymore. Unless I have to read a book for school or it doesn't catch my attention, I might have a hard time bringing myself to read
it. Different types of texts require different approaches. When I'm picking out a new book to read for pleasure, I like to read the description on the
back or in the front cover. It gives me an idea of what the book is going to be about and whether or not I'll be interested in it. If the description

Why Should I Read? Essay
Why Should I Read?
"Reading a book is like re–writing it for yourself.... You bring to a novel, anything you read, all your experience of the world. You bring your history
and you read it in your own terms."
Angela Carter (1940–1992), British author.
Why read? Why should I read the book before it comes out in cinema? Why is settling down with a good book better then sitting on the couch
watching The Simpson's reruns? I have often pondered the merits of reading, but you don't realise the advantages until you actually begin reading. Until
I unlocked my first real book I couldn't have dreamed of the wonders and marvels that it opens to you. It's just that when you do read you discover how

With a book to aid the imagination, a person can go anywhere. They can be marooned on a desert island where normal boys change to savage beasts
in Lord of the Flies, they can become Hannibal lector's next victim or even have a romance with the arrogant Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.
Books hold vast amounts of knowledge. In every book, there is something to learn. Biographies and Diaries can give us accounts of the Second World
War, the sinking of the Titanic, the truth behind celebrities while history books teach us not to make the same mistakes twice.
Children should be encouraged to read from a young age, it helps them with spelling and grammar. It cultivates their young minds and helps them to
believe anything is possible.
In 1966
Margaret Craig McNamara founded Reading Is Fundamental after discovering that the children she volunteered to tutor in Washington, D.C., owned
no or few books. It develops and delivers children's and family literacy programs that help prepare young children for reading and motivate school–age
children to read regularly. Last year, RIF celebrated its 35th anniversary and the milestone of placing more than 200 million books in the hands and
homes of children most at risk of educational failure.
Books are a free pastime and can help to escape from reality.
Unlike going to the cinema where people spend a lot of money to see films such as Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Red Dragon all of which are based

Reflective Essay About Reading
Reading is important in all aspects of learning. It widens vocabulary, improves imagination, and is how we discover new things. More than
anything, reading develops the mind. It is important to begin reading with children at a very young age, to introduce new concepts and words
creating a strong basis for the future. Most small children love being read to; they find picture books fun and enjoyable because of the animated
pictures and presentation of the words. After each time they read a book, they remember the fun pictures or words, looking forward to the next
book. If a good memory of reading is planted in a child, as they grow older not only will reading come more naturally, it will bring more pleasure. I
believe the key to successfully getting a student to read is to make it as enjoyable as possible. In reading this article, I was able to relate on a few
different levels. I could put myself in the teacher's shoes on some levels, but even more so with the students. In Middle School, one of our reading
assignments were reading cards, for which our teacher would pick a new genre each month and we had to read chapter books according to the
genre. Reading cards were a tool the students would use to summarize their readings each time they read. The reading cards consisted of a chapter
book the teacher chose, each month a different genre. After each section we read, a short summary was to be written and we had to write down and
look up any words we didn't know. This was

My Journey : My Reading Journey
My reading journey began at a very early age and was kickstarted by my family. My mother and father encouraged me to read as soon as I could do it
by myself. However, I am unable to give all the credit to my parents. As soon as I could read I devoured books at a break neck speed whenever I got
free time. Books became an island of fantasy where I would take my private jet mind to whenever I was stressed. I may have been exposed to reading
by my family, but I lovingly drowned myself in a sea of literature as soon as I was able. My first memory as a reader was of "Harry Potter and the
Sorcerer's Stone" but ironically, I did not read it. My mother read small portions of the book every night before I went to sleep. This is truly the

Slightly at my sisters urging, mostly to satiate the endless void I had for books, I took on the mountain of a book "Brisinger" in fourth grade. This
was a big step for me at the time because I had never read a book that long and needed to test the boundaries of my curiosity. I read "Brisinger" in,
what felt like a record, 3 months. This was the peak of my elementary reading ventures and I had conquered it. I became a more confident, excited,
and deep reader moving forward. My middle school years were not as eventful as a reader. I almost singularly read fiction and didn't grow much as a
reader besides the level at which I read increased. This is the time at which I started to have less free–time, therefore less reading time. I still loved
reading, however it wasn't as easily accomplished in middle school compared to elementary school.
I entered freshmen year as a confident reader, choosing "The Kite Runner" for a class project. That book was very mature and had dark themes,
which I was unfamiliar with. "The Kite Runner" tore the veil from my eyes and forced me to deal with unhappy truths in the world which I didn't
enjoy. This distaste led me to take a break from reading for freshman year. However, my passion for books was stirred when I read "In Cold Blood". It
was the first non–fiction book I supremely enjoyed and helped introduce me to a new genre. Finally I read "East of Eden" and enjoyed it. This book on
my ideal bookshelf symbolizes that I

My Literary Impact Of Reading And My Reading
My earliest reading memories are of me reading the little books from the bookstore that would have the difficulty level marked by a number like a red
1 or green 2. The book I remember reading in particular was the Jungle Book, I was around four or five years old. The first and probably best literary
sponsor I've ever had is my mother. From a young age my mom was teaching me big words and buying all types of books, like Baby Einstein and little
level 1 paperback books. My mom made sure I knew words that would be considered long and complicated for a 4–year–old, but as a result when other
kids were saying something simple like "I'm sorry" I was saying "I Apologize" at 4! The literary impact of my mom has greatly and positively affected
my literacy. As I got older I started to grow a deep interest in biographies and books about people's daily lives and cultures. I began to read several
books about Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, and Al Capone just to name a few. I also would watch movies or shows then read the books they were based
on, I know that sounds backward but that's the way I liked to do it. I read books like Hunger Games, Life of Pi, and Game of Thrones: Story of ice
and fire. The reading of these books really began to open up my knowledge and appreciation for the art of storytelling at the young age of around 12
years old. Then my love of music, football, and other interests caused me to do more informational reading as I got into my early to mid teens til even

Importance Of Reading
The Importance of Reading
Growing up throughout the years it goes from teachers reading books to your class to books getting assigned to you to read independantly. Most of
the books assigned would be so boring and pointless to read. Normally when I got assigned a book I would just read through it trying to comprehend
some parts of it. I never tried to enjoy it or show an interest in the book. Reading to me was not something I ever enjoyed doing. I did not like reading
for pleasure and for class assignments because I did not think there was a point. When I was reading independent books for pleasure, or an
assignment I would think to myself, "Why, why, why... do we need to do this." Reading to me seemed like a waste of time, until my senior

Mrs. Daniels explained to me I would be making a mistake, because the teacher for this course is one of the best teachers at school. Later on Mr.
Garland would win best teacher of the year for the yearbook. So I decided to try the class out because it was a college class. I figured that's what I
needed going into college in the months to come.
Turns out my counselor, Mrs. Daniels was right. This class was exactly what I needed to increase my vocabulary skills and start enjoying reading.
Since the reading was a requirement for the class, I told myself I needed to read the books to understand it and enjoy what I was reading. Mr.
Garland picked out the first book, and then let us pick from a series of books for the next five books to come. The first book we read was called
"The Bluest Eyes" by Toni Morrison. As most people know this book is a classic, but at times can be confusing. We had to finish the whole book
in two weeks. I thought that task would be nearly impossible, but Mr. Garland made it seem possible by letting us have time in class to read it. We
also discussed in groups what was going on in the book to make it a tad bit more understandable.Reading for the first time was fun instead of a chore.
As the semester went on, I never had to force myself to read any of the books that were assigned to us, but the last few months sometimes were hard to
find any motivation as a senior. Mr.

America, a country created by the outcasts of Europe in the 1700's, is a nation that consists of a diversity not known by any other country. Since
the first settlers travelled to this new nation, people from all over the world have come to this great country for many different reasons. Some
people come to make a better life for their families, some people come to experience freedom, some have come to stay alive and avoid genocide of
their own nation, in the past some have even been forced to come to America with their lives being changed forever. In schools today, we learn about

I was an outcast because I had come from another culture that these girls didn't quite understand. If they had been taught about different cultures in
their schools before college they would have been able to have a better understanding of where I came from which would have helped them not to
judge me so quickly. There are many ways a teacher can incorporate multicultural literature into a classroom. One of the more popular forms of
incorporating outside reading is through book clubs or literature circles. In literature circles the teacher brings in about four or five copies of four
or five different books. Before beginning to read the books, the teacher will give a brief description of each book to the class (Tompkins). It is
usually best if the teacher has already read each book so they can give a better overview of the book. After the students have had a chance to learn a
little about each book they will then choose their book, as well as other members for their group. Some teachers may make exceptions to the amount
of choices the students have, but the students should be given as much freedom as possible. Most times the books will each tell a story from the
perspective of someone from a different culture. The cultures represented may be the same cultures displayed in the classroom or different cultures. All
the books however, usually share a

My Experience of Using Reading Strategies Essay
Reading a book has always been truly enjoyable. However, sometimes, reading books that are not in my first language can be fairly challenging. For
example, I have reading assignments every week for my Zoology tutorial. One of the books that we are reading is The Structure of Scientific
Revolutions by a renowned scientist, Thomas S. Kuhn. Even my American classmates found this book very difficult to read because in brief, it is a
combination of complicated scientific facts and philosophy. After I learned about the reading strategies, I used them when I was reading the postscript
of the book. In general, the postscript contained conclusions of all previous chapters and the author added some new ideas and explanations since this

What I did next was read the questions that my professor assigned to me. I could locate the related paragraphs for most of the questions easily
because they share similarities with the subtitles. With those questions in mind, I started to read the chapter. I found the answers to seven questions
out of eight, which was quite a success compared to my previous experiences. And instead of looking up unfamiliar words while reading the article,
I skipped the word that I did not know and I was quite satisfied to learn that even without knowing the definition of those difficult scientific terms, I
could still understood the author's opinions. At last but not the least, taking note is definitely important even if the note only contains several words.
What I used to do while I was reading was that I underlined the words and the sentences. But after finishing reading, when I wanted to find one of
the sentence, it always took a long period of time because the lines were everywhere and I could tell what the sentences was about unless I read them
again. So I took some brief notes about the important theories and wrote down the pages this time. Therefore when I tried to find the answer to the
last question, I read the notes first and had three possible answers, and then I checked them one by one and finally I got all the answers. Additionally,
these notes were very helpful during the discussion panel. I took the lead of

Listening Vs. Reading Books
Pros One of the pros for listening to an audiobook rather than reading a book by yourself, would be that there would be narrators that could bring
the story and the characters to life so that they could make the story a more interesting experience. While listening to an audiobook you could have
a better sense on visualizing the story because you only have to focus on the images the words produce in your mind. Another reason why
listening to audiobooks is better than reading books is that audiobooks make a great way to multitask. For example while doing chores you could
simply listen to an audiobook on your mobile devices and start listening while doing chorus it's that simple. CONS One of the cons of listening to
audiobooks is that you could get distracted in a matter of seconds. For example if you're hearing an audiobook and suddenly you get distracted you
have to go back on what the narrator said. While listening to an audiobook you can easily forget on what you read and you have to go back and
listened to the key points on what the story was about. Audiobooks are not for visual learners for example if a visual learner listens to an audiobook
they would definitely get lost and not know what the story is about. 2. For me personally, I think reading a book is much faster than listening to an
audiobook. The reason why I choose this method is because when I read a book I skim through the text and tried to find the key points on what each
chapter is about and

Reflection About Reading
Reading
Introduction
Reading is one of the main skills for learning a language. Reading is a skill that requires learning. It has its own strategies to be mastered. Although
reading skills promote at early age by the support of parents, teachers play an important role in varying strategies of learning reading at children.
The way I learned English I learned to read English by scaffolding the long words to know which part of speech they are. I started by reading words,
phrases, sentences, paragraphs then whole pages. At the start, I realized the mistake I was making by stopping at each difficult word to translate. This
interrupted my whole understanding of what I was reading. Then I moved to guessing difficult words from the context. I...show more content...
The second strategy is scanning. It is a primarily quick reading through that allows me to break reading into pieces or scaffolding to reach the main
ideas. Scanning is to review what you have read to understand your reading. Deconstructing the material of reading is a direct purpose of reading. It
allows to get specific details to connect with general ideas to get a full picture of what is being read. The third strategy is summarizing. I used to give
the reading passage again but in my own words to make sure to what extent I mastered it. This develops my understanding of the reading material.
Then I answer reading questions and try to get answers from my summary and from the original reading material to make sure my summary lacks
nothing.
Summarizing makes me understand what I am reading using a simpler language. The fourth strategy to learn English reading is discussing. I used to
discuss what I read which an adult or a teacher. Discussing my reading will add assurance and full understanding of it. It will make me more able to
apply what I read in life through discussing and analyzing looking for positive and negative aspects in the reading passage. Discussion based reading
can also be tested through answering questions related to the passage if reading and commenting on them. The fifth strategy is extracting. It is very
important to use it for getting information out if visual charts or timetables. I

My Passion For Reading
Starting from when I was young and to where I am today, I can tell you that I have a passion for reading. That's right, from reading books at a
young age to browsing on the internet today. I do enjoy what the perspective of the author of a book or a website is thinking of when they document
their ideas. Of course I'm talking about the times when I get to read on my free time and not because I have to do it for the purpose of finishing a
school assignment. Reading makes me lose all track of time because of how it introduces me to interesting topics, a way to see other people's responses
/opinions, and a perspective in how the author thinks. With browsing the vastness of the internet, I been enjoying the interesting topics it brings about.

I find these discussions forums interesting as it brings out other people's opinions about the book. They could interpret the story differently and that
would be fine as it promotes more discussion in another direction. In the beginning, the only discussion I ever had for a book was for a school
assignment and that was only a couple of times. Now having access to the immense forums, the content is endless. This isn't just towards books, it
could be about anything. Cars, games, clothes, and songs of what people think of these are just topics I can think out of my head. The opinions and
the responses that bring activity to a discussion is something that gets me hooked as there are just so many things to read about. Though other people's
opinions/responses are something I look into, an author's perspective is also something that has gotten me lose track of time. What I meant by this is
with how the story is told. There are nearly 130 million books in the world that each tells a story in the author's perspective. The author can be
straightforward with the story, while some include details about everything, prolonging the storyline as some chapters are just fillers. Even with this
many books by the differently cultured authors, not everyone likes every author there is. Some people like authors based on their take on horror, while
some are into those that is detailed oriented with character and story development. For me, I do enjoy that aspect

Essay on The Importance of Reading
Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and even moral courage. In today's world with so
much more to know and to learn and also the need for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the
olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of
telling stories at bed time compensated to some extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together for
an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read, we also want to read more and more and catch up...show

There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying one's longing for knowledge. It may be a subject of scientific significance,
or a subject of historic or philosophic importance – varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind and trains one
for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading –reading for pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure,
reading which is devoted mainly to it differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves tension and
loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple
motive of escape and of "killing" time.
A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those who do not read. He can stand his ground. Reading
broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute for travel. It is not possible to travel as much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap created
by the lack of travel. "Reading", as Bacon wrote in his essay. 'Of Studies'. "maketh a full man: conference a ready man: and writing an exact man".
Thus a widely–read man is a better conversationalist and is able to see the other point of view.

My Love For Reading
As far back as I can remember I have been in love with books. Staying up into the late hours of the night because I could not handle going to bed
not knowing how a story would conclude. Being surrounded by piles of books was my version of heaven. I have my mother to thank for this
obsession with reading. As a little girl, she always read to me at night, and when I got to a certain age the roles reversed. She listened to me stumble
through the simplest words in endless amounts of Junie B Jones books. I could imagine it got irritating after a while listening to someone pronounce
words in broken syllables for an hour, but if she did not encourage me to read on I would not have excelled the way I have in school.

It made me angry that I had to go to classes where we just watched movies instead of delving into books with a complex meaning. My years in middle
school were wasted and only made me unprepared for the work that high school had in store for me.
"In The Great Gatsby, what is the metaphorical meaning of the bespectacled eyes on the billboard" my petite English teacher with similar owl
glasses asks to a room of unresponsive teens. The creative thinking I desperately craved in my middle school days now is an assault on the senses.
Thankfully I am not alone though, as everyone continues to stare at the teacher with a blank look on their face. Later on in the year I am assigned to
read the Book Thief the catch is that I need to find ten instances of figurative language in each chapter. Instead of being swept away in a
heartbreaking story I am more concerned about analyzing each sentence carefully to see if there is any hidden meaning. My classmates later on let
me in on a secret that they did not bother to read the book. " Why waste hours scanning the book page by page when the information needed to
complete the assignment is easily found online?" they tell me as though it was idiotic for me to actually dedicate time to read the book. Realization
about how the world of book lovers diminishes as one progresses through education was a unfortunate thing for me to wrap my

My Personal Experience of Reading
C. S. Lewis once said "You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me", which is extremely similar to my personal
outlook. Novels have given me an extensive amount of rewards over the years. The knowledge reading has given me has been extensive;
additionally, literature has been nothing but a boon to me. I have always considered myself a rather advanced reader, and having the skill of
advanced comprehension while reading has been an extremely useful tool that I continue to utilize. As I write, I use the countless hours of
experience reading to create an insightful and logical paper. For as long as I have been able to read, I can always remember being much more
enamored with what I would find in the library or at home much more so than that of what was given to us during class. Books from class would
simply make me want to fall asleep, meanwhile the books I would find for myself would create a door into another world unlike any that I had seen.
Due to books giving me a friend, gifting me with an improved attention to detail, and a superior (and sometimes odd) vocabulary, reading has
improved my life by a large margin.
Books have been an extensive aid to me during my years in elementary and middle school. Moreover, without the aid of literature, my life at that time
would have been extremely lonely and uneventful; due to my lack of friends at the time, books acted as a sort of placeholder. My taste in literature
began with autobiographies, and then expanded to almost anything I could get my hands on. At night, I would read novels by book–light before I
would go to bed. For my adolescent mind, literature took me to a fantasy world where anything was possible. Adventures were simply a page away,
and the size and scope of fantasy books took me to far reaching places of which I will never see with my own eyes. Although I appreciated these
books very much, I do not believe my teachers did as much. I have many memories of having my books taken away because I was reading during
class Fortunately, this was not always the case, but reading had a massive impact on my childhood this way. Additionally, Elementary school was my

Books vs Ebooks Essay
Now days with the rise of digital technology many physical items such as pen and paper are slowly being replaced by computers and smart phones.
But is this really a good thing? I read books and of course so do many other people in this class and around the globe. But since the creation of
'e–readers' more and more people have been converting to the technology based side of reading. Although technology is slowly becoming more
predominant in this era we should not rely on it to always entertain and keep us occupied.
I think 'real, physical' books are better than e–books because you can truly own a book. As Mortimer J. Adler, a popular author, says, 'Full ownership

Of course that's not strictly true–you can loan your book by loaning your reading device, but that's like giving someone access to one of your books by

And books are a tactile experience, meaning they are supposed to be experienced through touch and smell (especially for the old books). A book is
meant to be an experience that can have depressions and elevations on the cover and text, feeling the weight of the pages as you turn them and all of
these elements when combined make a book what it is, but when you read an e–book you are exposed to digitized text and a screen. And it's been
proven that when people are exposed to screens of TVs or computers they are less likely to have a good night sleep. On a web poll about e–books vs.
books one person commented, 'I've tried reading a few e–books but I've always given up. I just don't like looking at digitized text when I'm reading a

A book is a single–task item that is written to distract the reader from everything else happening around them, they are technology designed for the best

Reading Challenges
Reading Challenges The most difficult course I have when it comes to reading challenges is my microbiology course. The text book is large and
the subject is complex which makes it somewhat hard to understand at times. I have tried to come up with a plan that will help me read and
understand the required material at a higher comprehension level. This book is written for a college level audience, so it is designed to be more
complex than lower level textbooks. Also, microbiology is different than a lot of the courses I have taken in the past. Even though I have taken a lot
of science courses, this is a more intense biology course than any I have ever taken. Many of the concepts are similar to ones I have studied
previously, but they are discussed in a greater depth. Reading the scientific terms can be hard, not necessarily because they are in Latin, but because
they are not similar to other terms I have seen before. It is also sometimes difficult to relate the terms to the practical explanations given for them. The
text book will have side notes that try and make the concepts easier, but often these are not enough to allow me to fully grasp the concept. However,
the most difficult problem is the scholarly articles required for some of the units in the class. The articles are very difficult to interpret because of the
scientific language. The plan that I have developed is to work with other people so that we can all understand the reading assignments better. I think this

Why Is Reading So Important?
Why is Reading So Important?
Like most of you, I'm a voracious reader and have taught myself many things throughout my life, whether I thought of these pursuits as study or not. I
began gobbling up books up before I was in Kindergarten and have continued to devour them until now, regardless of where life took me along the way.
This was my mom's influence, of course.
She was a big believer in the value of being a bookworm and instilled the habit in us at an early age – we never had much money growing up, but there
were always books to fill the time and get our imaginations churning.
Some of my fondest memories include sitting in the living room with an afghan blanket pulled to my chin, my breath visible in the frigid air. Reading
about how cruise ships were built or the lives of whales or Native American history. All things I never saw but got to know intimately.

But we had the world at our fingertips, and in those moments you didn't feel the lack.
A reader always knows how to entertain themselves and learn something new. Reading may not always be the most productive way to learn, but there's
no shorter path to the many facets of the human experience than through reading books on a variety of subjects and experiences.
In fact, I think comparing book reading to other learning strategies in the short–term paints an incomplete picture. Because the true power of reading is
how the knowledge links together and snowballs over time.
The reading habit definitely seemed to make me wiser than other people my age, and this is without a determined plan for study – I just swallowed
books wholesale and moved on to the next as interest called.
I Also Believe Books Make You A More Moral

My Journey Through Reading And Writing

  • 1. My Journey Through Reading And Writing My journey through reading and writing started once I started school. I don't remember the early years but they laid down a foundation for me. It got me to where I am today. I love reading for pleasure but I want to be more open to different types of genres. I'm not the best writer but I try my best to write well. I have a strong approach to writing an essay but when it comes to actually writing, I don't feel too confident. I hope that this year will help me become a better reader and writer. My reading experiences have always been enjoyable. I love to read when I find an interesting book. It's easy for me to be sucked into a book if the story catches my eye. I mostly like to read teen romance novels. They appeal to me simply because of my interest in a love story. My parents hate buying me books because they know I'll be finished reading within a week or so. Reading has always been really easy to me. It seems almost natural to be sucked into other worlds. The words start to flow over the pages and suddenly it feels like I'm not even reading anymore. Unless I have to read a book for school or it doesn't catch my attention, I might have a hard time bringing myself to read it. Different types of texts require different approaches. When I'm picking out a new book to read for pleasure, I like to read the description on the back or in the front cover. It gives me an idea of what the book is going to be about and whether or not I'll be interested in it. If the description Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Why Should I Read? Essay Why Should I Read? "Reading a book is like re–writing it for yourself.... You bring to a novel, anything you read, all your experience of the world. You bring your history and you read it in your own terms." Angela Carter (1940–1992), British author. Why read? Why should I read the book before it comes out in cinema? Why is settling down with a good book better then sitting on the couch watching The Simpson's reruns? I have often pondered the merits of reading, but you don't realise the advantages until you actually begin reading. Until I unlocked my first real book I couldn't have dreamed of the wonders and marvels that it opens to you. It's just that when you do read you discover how exquisite the delights of reading are....show more content... With a book to aid the imagination, a person can go anywhere. They can be marooned on a desert island where normal boys change to savage beasts in Lord of the Flies, they can become Hannibal lector's next victim or even have a romance with the arrogant Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. Books hold vast amounts of knowledge. In every book, there is something to learn. Biographies and Diaries can give us accounts of the Second World War, the sinking of the Titanic, the truth behind celebrities while history books teach us not to make the same mistakes twice. Children should be encouraged to read from a young age, it helps them with spelling and grammar. It cultivates their young minds and helps them to believe anything is possible. In 1966 Margaret Craig McNamara founded Reading Is Fundamental after discovering that the children she volunteered to tutor in Washington, D.C., owned no or few books. It develops and delivers children's and family literacy programs that help prepare young children for reading and motivate school–age children to read regularly. Last year, RIF celebrated its 35th anniversary and the milestone of placing more than 200 million books in the hands and homes of children most at risk of educational failure. Books are a free pastime and can help to escape from reality.

  • 4. Reflective Essay About Reading Reading is important in all aspects of learning. It widens vocabulary, improves imagination, and is how we discover new things. More than anything, reading develops the mind. It is important to begin reading with children at a very young age, to introduce new concepts and words creating a strong basis for the future. Most small children love being read to; they find picture books fun and enjoyable because of the animated pictures and presentation of the words. After each time they read a book, they remember the fun pictures or words, looking forward to the next book. If a good memory of reading is planted in a child, as they grow older not only will reading come more naturally, it will bring more pleasure. I believe the key to successfully getting a student to read is to make it as enjoyable as possible. In reading this article, I was able to relate on a few different levels. I could put myself in the teacher's shoes on some levels, but even more so with the students. In Middle School, one of our reading assignments were reading cards, for which our teacher would pick a new genre each month and we had to read chapter books according to the genre. Reading cards were a tool the students would use to summarize their readings each time they read. The reading cards consisted of a chapter book the teacher chose, each month a different genre. After each section we read, a short summary was to be written and we had to write down and look up any words we didn't know. This was Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. My Journey : My Reading Journey My reading journey began at a very early age and was kickstarted by my family. My mother and father encouraged me to read as soon as I could do it by myself. However, I am unable to give all the credit to my parents. As soon as I could read I devoured books at a break neck speed whenever I got free time. Books became an island of fantasy where I would take my private jet mind to whenever I was stressed. I may have been exposed to reading by my family, but I lovingly drowned myself in a sea of literature as soon as I was able. My first memory as a reader was of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" but ironically, I did not read it. My mother read small portions of the book every night before I went to sleep. This is truly the beginning...show more content... Slightly at my sisters urging, mostly to satiate the endless void I had for books, I took on the mountain of a book "Brisinger" in fourth grade. This was a big step for me at the time because I had never read a book that long and needed to test the boundaries of my curiosity. I read "Brisinger" in, what felt like a record, 3 months. This was the peak of my elementary reading ventures and I had conquered it. I became a more confident, excited, and deep reader moving forward. My middle school years were not as eventful as a reader. I almost singularly read fiction and didn't grow much as a reader besides the level at which I read increased. This is the time at which I started to have less free–time, therefore less reading time. I still loved reading, however it wasn't as easily accomplished in middle school compared to elementary school. I entered freshmen year as a confident reader, choosing "The Kite Runner" for a class project. That book was very mature and had dark themes, which I was unfamiliar with. "The Kite Runner" tore the veil from my eyes and forced me to deal with unhappy truths in the world which I didn't enjoy. This distaste led me to take a break from reading for freshman year. However, my passion for books was stirred when I read "In Cold Blood". It was the first non–fiction book I supremely enjoyed and helped introduce me to a new genre. Finally I read "East of Eden" and enjoyed it. This book on my ideal bookshelf symbolizes that I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. My Literary Impact Of Reading And My Reading My earliest reading memories are of me reading the little books from the bookstore that would have the difficulty level marked by a number like a red 1 or green 2. The book I remember reading in particular was the Jungle Book, I was around four or five years old. The first and probably best literary sponsor I've ever had is my mother. From a young age my mom was teaching me big words and buying all types of books, like Baby Einstein and little level 1 paperback books. My mom made sure I knew words that would be considered long and complicated for a 4–year–old, but as a result when other kids were saying something simple like "I'm sorry" I was saying "I Apologize" at 4! The literary impact of my mom has greatly and positively affected my literacy. As I got older I started to grow a deep interest in biographies and books about people's daily lives and cultures. I began to read several books about Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, and Al Capone just to name a few. I also would watch movies or shows then read the books they were based on, I know that sounds backward but that's the way I liked to do it. I read books like Hunger Games, Life of Pi, and Game of Thrones: Story of ice and fire. The reading of these books really began to open up my knowledge and appreciation for the art of storytelling at the young age of around 12 years old. Then my love of music, football, and other interests caused me to do more informational reading as I got into my early to mid teens til even now I'm a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Importance Of Reading The Importance of Reading Growing up throughout the years it goes from teachers reading books to your class to books getting assigned to you to read independantly. Most of the books assigned would be so boring and pointless to read. Normally when I got assigned a book I would just read through it trying to comprehend some parts of it. I never tried to enjoy it or show an interest in the book. Reading to me was not something I ever enjoyed doing. I did not like reading for pleasure and for class assignments because I did not think there was a point. When I was reading independent books for pleasure, or an assignment I would think to myself, "Why, why, why... do we need to do this." Reading to me seemed like a waste of time, until my senior ...show more content... Mrs. Daniels explained to me I would be making a mistake, because the teacher for this course is one of the best teachers at school. Later on Mr. Garland would win best teacher of the year for the yearbook. So I decided to try the class out because it was a college class. I figured that's what I needed going into college in the months to come. The first book we read was called "The Bluest Eyes" by Toni Morrison. As most people know this book is a classic, but at times can be confusing. We had to finish the whole book in two weeks. I thought that task would be nearly impossible, but Mr. Garland made it seem possible by letting us have time in class to read it. We also discussed in groups what was going on in the book to make it a tad bit more understandable.Reading for the first time was fun instead of a chore. As the semester went on, I never had to force myself to read any of the books that were assigned to us, but the last few months sometimes were hard to find any motivation as a senior. • 8. Online Reading Essay Online Reading Essay America, a country created by the outcasts of Europe in the 1700's, is a nation that consists of a diversity not known by any other country. Since the first settlers travelled to this new nation, people from all over the world have come to this great country for many different reasons. Some people come to make a better life for their families, some people come to experience freedom, some have come to stay alive and avoid genocide of their own nation, in the past some have even been forced to come to America with their lives being changed forever. In schools today, we learn about the reasons people come to this nation, but it's not often that we learn what happened after they arrived. Textbooks are often written to...show more content... I was an outcast because I had come from another culture that these girls didn't quite understand. If they had been taught about different cultures in their schools before college they would have been able to have a better understanding of where I came from which would have helped them not to judge me so quickly. There are many ways a teacher can incorporate multicultural literature into a classroom. One of the more popular forms of incorporating outside reading is through book clubs or literature circles. In literature circles the teacher brings in about four or five copies of four or five different books. Before beginning to read the books, the teacher will give a brief description of each book to the class (Tompkins). It is usually best if the teacher has already read each book so they can give a better overview of the book. After the students have had a chance to learn a little about each book they will then choose their book, as well as other members for their group. Some teachers may make exceptions to the amount of choices the students have, but the students should be given as much freedom as possible. Most times the books will each tell a story from the perspective of someone from a different culture. The cultures represented may be the same cultures displayed in the classroom or different cultures. All the books however, usually share a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. My Experience of Using Reading Strategies Essay Reading a book has always been truly enjoyable. However, sometimes, reading books that are not in my first language can be fairly challenging. For example, I have reading assignments every week for my Zoology tutorial. One of the books that we are reading is The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by a renowned scientist, Thomas S. Kuhn. Even my American classmates found this book very difficult to read because in brief, it is a combination of complicated scientific facts and philosophy. After I learned about the reading strategies, I used them when I was reading the postscript of the book. In general, the postscript contained conclusions of all previous chapters and the author added some new ideas and explanations since this ...show more content... What I did next was read the questions that my professor assigned to me. I could locate the related paragraphs for most of the questions easily because they share similarities with the subtitles. With those questions in mind, I started to read the chapter. I found the answers to seven questions out of eight, which was quite a success compared to my previous experiences. And instead of looking up unfamiliar words while reading the article, I skipped the word that I did not know and I was quite satisfied to learn that even without knowing the definition of those difficult scientific terms, I could still understood the author's opinions. At last but not the least, taking note is definitely important even if the note only contains several words. What I used to do while I was reading was that I underlined the words and the sentences. But after finishing reading, when I wanted to find one of the sentence, it always took a long period of time because the lines were everywhere and I could tell what the sentences was about unless I read them again. So I took some brief notes about the important theories and wrote down the pages this time. Therefore when I tried to find the answer to the last question, I read the notes first and had three possible answers, and then I checked them one by one and finally I got all the answers. Additionally, these notes were very helpful during the discussion panel. I took the lead of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Listening Vs. Reading Books Pros One of the pros for listening to an audiobook rather than reading a book by yourself, would be that there would be narrators that could bring the story and the characters to life so that they could make the story a more interesting experience. While listening to an audiobook you could have a better sense on visualizing the story because you only have to focus on the images the words produce in your mind. Another reason why listening to audiobooks is better than reading books is that audiobooks make a great way to multitask. For example while doing chores you could simply listen to an audiobook on your mobile devices and start listening while doing chorus it's that simple. CONS One of the cons of listening to audiobooks is that you could get distracted in a matter of seconds. For example if you're hearing an audiobook and suddenly you get distracted you have to go back on what the narrator said. While listening to an audiobook you can easily forget on what you read and you have to go back and listened to the key points on what the story was about. Audiobooks are not for visual learners for example if a visual learner listens to an audiobook they would definitely get lost and not know what the story is about. 2. For me personally, I think reading a book is much faster than listening to an audiobook. The reason why I choose this method is because when I read a book I skim through the text and tried to find the key points on what each chapter is about and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Reflection About Reading Reading Introduction Reading is one of the main skills for learning a language. Reading is a skill that requires learning. It has its own strategies to be mastered. Although reading skills promote at early age by the support of parents, teachers play an important role in varying strategies of learning reading at children. The way I learned English I learned to read English by scaffolding the long words to know which part of speech they are. I started by reading words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs then whole pages. At the start, I realized the mistake I was making by stopping at each difficult word to translate. This interrupted my whole understanding of what I was reading. Then I moved to guessing difficult words from the context. I...show more content... The second strategy is scanning. It is a primarily quick reading through that allows me to break reading into pieces or scaffolding to reach the main ideas. Scanning is to review what you have read to understand your reading. Deconstructing the material of reading is a direct purpose of reading. It allows to get specific details to connect with general ideas to get a full picture of what is being read. The third strategy is summarizing. I used to give the reading passage again but in my own words to make sure to what extent I mastered it. This develops my understanding of the reading material. Then I answer reading questions and try to get answers from my summary and from the original reading material to make sure my summary lacks nothing. Summarizing makes me understand what I am reading using a simpler language. The fourth strategy to learn English reading is discussing. I used to discuss what I read which an adult or a teacher. Discussing my reading will add assurance and full understanding of it. It will make me more able to apply what I read in life through discussing and analyzing looking for positive and negative aspects in the reading passage. Discussion based reading can also be tested through answering questions related to the passage if reading and commenting on them. The fifth strategy is extracting. It is very important to use it for getting information out if visual charts or timetables. I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. My Passion For Reading Starting from when I was young and to where I am today, I can tell you that I have a passion for reading. That's right, from reading books at a young age to browsing on the internet today. I do enjoy what the perspective of the author of a book or a website is thinking of when they document their ideas. Of course I'm talking about the times when I get to read on my free time and not because I have to do it for the purpose of finishing a school assignment. Reading makes me lose all track of time because of how it introduces me to interesting topics, a way to see other people's responses /opinions, and a perspective in how the author thinks. With browsing the vastness of the internet, I been enjoying the interesting topics it brings about. ...show more content... I find these discussions forums interesting as it brings out other people's opinions about the book. They could interpret the story differently and that would be fine as it promotes more discussion in another direction. In the beginning, the only discussion I ever had for a book was for a school assignment and that was only a couple of times. Now having access to the immense forums, the content is endless. This isn't just towards books, it could be about anything. Cars, games, clothes, and songs of what people think of these are just topics I can think out of my head. The opinions and the responses that bring activity to a discussion is something that gets me hooked as there are just so many things to read about. Though other people's opinions/responses are something I look into, an author's perspective is also something that has gotten me lose track of time. What I meant by this is with how the story is told. There are nearly 130 million books in the world that each tells a story in the author's perspective. The author can be straightforward with the story, while some include details about everything, prolonging the storyline as some chapters are just fillers. Even with this many books by the differently cultured authors, not everyone likes every author there is. Some people like authors based on their take on horror, while some are into those that is detailed oriented with character and story development. For me, I do enjoy that aspect Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Essay on The Importance of Reading Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and even moral courage. In today's world with so much more to know and to learn and also the need for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of telling stories at bed time compensated to some extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together for an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read, we also want to read more and more and catch up...show more content... There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying one's longing for knowledge. It may be a subject of scientific significance, or a subject of historic or philosophic importance – varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind and trains one for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading –reading for pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure, reading which is devoted mainly to it differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves tension and loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple motive of escape and of "killing" time. A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those who do not read. He can stand his ground. Reading broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute for travel. It is not possible to travel as much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap created by the lack of travel. "Reading", as Bacon wrote in his essay. 'Of Studies'. "maketh a full man: conference a ready man: and writing an exact man". Thus a widely–read man is a better conversationalist and is able to see the other point of view. Literature is a form Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. My Love For Reading As far back as I can remember I have been in love with books. Staying up into the late hours of the night because I could not handle going to bed not knowing how a story would conclude. Being surrounded by piles of books was my version of heaven. I have my mother to thank for this obsession with reading. As a little girl, she always read to me at night, and when I got to a certain age the roles reversed. She listened to me stumble through the simplest words in endless amounts of Junie B Jones books. I could imagine it got irritating after a while listening to someone pronounce words in broken syllables for an hour, but if she did not encourage me to read on I would not have excelled the way I have in school. In Elementary school, I was...show more content... It made me angry that I had to go to classes where we just watched movies instead of delving into books with a complex meaning. My years in middle school were wasted and only made me unprepared for the work that high school had in store for me. "In The Great Gatsby, what is the metaphorical meaning of the bespectacled eyes on the billboard" my petite English teacher with similar owl glasses asks to a room of unresponsive teens. The creative thinking I desperately craved in my middle school days now is an assault on the senses. Thankfully I am not alone though, as everyone continues to stare at the teacher with a blank look on their face. Later on in the year I am assigned to read the Book Thief the catch is that I need to find ten instances of figurative language in each chapter. Instead of being swept away in a heartbreaking story I am more concerned about analyzing each sentence carefully to see if there is any hidden meaning. My classmates later on let me in on a secret that they did not bother to read the book. " Why waste hours scanning the book page by page when the information needed to complete the assignment is easily found online?" they tell me as though it was idiotic for me to actually dedicate time to read the book. Realization about how the world of book lovers diminishes as one progresses through education was a unfortunate thing for me to wrap my Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 16. My Personal Experience of Reading C. S. Lewis once said "You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me", which is extremely similar to my personal outlook. Novels have given me an extensive amount of rewards over the years. The knowledge reading has given me has been extensive; additionally, literature has been nothing but a boon to me. I have always considered myself a rather advanced reader, and having the skill of advanced comprehension while reading has been an extremely useful tool that I continue to utilize. As I write, I use the countless hours of experience reading to create an insightful and logical paper. For as long as I have been able to read, I can always remember being much more enamored with what I would find in the library or at home much more so than that of what was given to us during class. Books from class would simply make me want to fall asleep, meanwhile the books I would find for myself would create a door into another world unlike any that I had seen. Due to books giving me a friend, gifting me with an improved attention to detail, and a superior (and sometimes odd) vocabulary, reading has improved my life by a large margin. Books have been an extensive aid to me during my years in elementary and middle school. Moreover, without the aid of literature, my life at that time would have been extremely lonely and uneventful; due to my lack of friends at the time, books acted as a sort of placeholder. My taste in literature began with autobiographies, and then expanded to almost anything I could get my hands on. At night, I would read novels by book–light before I would go to bed. For my adolescent mind, literature took me to a fantasy world where anything was possible. Adventures were simply a page away, and the size and scope of fantasy books took me to far reaching places of which I will never see with my own eyes. Although I appreciated these books very much, I do not believe my teachers did as much. I have many memories of having my books taken away because I was reading during class Fortunately, this was not always the case, but reading had a massive impact on my childhood this way. Additionally, Elementary school was my renaissance for knowledge from Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Books vs Ebooks Essay Now days with the rise of digital technology many physical items such as pen and paper are slowly being replaced by computers and smart phones. But is this really a good thing? I read books and of course so do many other people in this class and around the globe. But since the creation of 'e–readers' more and more people have been converting to the technology based side of reading. Although technology is slowly becoming more predominant in this era we should not rely on it to always entertain and keep us occupied. I think 'real, physical' books are better than e–books because you can truly own a book. As Mortimer J. Adler, a popular author, says, 'Full ownership comes only when you have made [the book] a part of yourself, and the best...show more content... Of course that's not strictly true–you can loan your book by loaning your reading device, but that's like giving someone access to one of your books by loaning them an entire library, book cases and all. And books are a tactile experience, meaning they are supposed to be experienced through touch and smell (especially for the old books). A book is meant to be an experience that can have depressions and elevations on the cover and text, feeling the weight of the pages as you turn them and all of these elements when combined make a book what it is, but when you read an e–book you are exposed to digitized text and a screen. And it's been proven that when people are exposed to screens of TVs or computers they are less likely to have a good night sleep. On a web poll about e–books vs. books one person commented, 'I've tried reading a few e–books but I've always given up. I just don't like looking at digitized text when I'm reading a novel. I like the feel, the weight and even the smell of books,' many of the following comments made by others agreed with this persons thoughts. A book is a single–task item that is written to distract the reader from everything else happening around them, they are technology designed for the best possible reading experience. An e–reader, however, tends to be a multi–tasking item with the ability to play music and videos as well as hold books. The iPad has a reading function but the focus is Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 19. Reading Challenges Reading Challenges The most difficult course I have when it comes to reading challenges is my microbiology course. The text book is large and the subject is complex which makes it somewhat hard to understand at times. I have tried to come up with a plan that will help me read and understand the required material at a higher comprehension level. This book is written for a college level audience, so it is designed to be more complex than lower level textbooks. Also, microbiology is different than a lot of the courses I have taken in the past. Even though I have taken a lot of science courses, this is a more intense biology course than any I have ever taken. Many of the concepts are similar to ones I have studied previously, but they are discussed in a greater depth. Reading the scientific terms can be hard, not necessarily because they are in Latin, but because they are not similar to other terms I have seen before. It is also sometimes difficult to relate the terms to the practical explanations given for them. The text book will have side notes that try and make the concepts easier, but often these are not enough to allow me to fully grasp the concept. However, the most difficult problem is the scholarly articles required for some of the units in the class. The articles are very difficult to interpret because of the scientific language. The plan that I have developed is to work with other people so that we can all understand the reading assignments better. I think this Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Why Is Reading So Important? Why is Reading So Important? Like most of you, I'm a voracious reader and have taught myself many things throughout my life, whether I thought of these pursuits as study or not. I began gobbling up books up before I was in Kindergarten and have continued to devour them until now, regardless of where life took me along the way. This was my mom's influence, of course. She was a big believer in the value of being a bookworm and instilled the habit in us at an early age – we never had much money growing up, but there were always books to fill the time and get our imaginations churning. Some of my fondest memories include sitting in the living room with an afghan blanket pulled to my chin, my breath visible in the frigid air. Reading about how cruise ships were built or the lives of whales or Native American history. All things I never saw but got to know intimately. ...show more content... But we had the world at our fingertips, and in those moments you didn't feel the lack. A reader always knows how to entertain themselves and learn something new. Reading may not always be the most productive way to learn, but there's no shorter path to the many facets of the human experience than through reading books on a variety of subjects and experiences. In fact, I think comparing book reading to other learning strategies in the short–term paints an incomplete picture. Because the true power of reading is how the knowledge links together and snowballs over time. The reading habit definitely seemed to make me wiser than other people my age, and this is without a determined plan for study – I just swallowed books wholesale and moved on to the next as interest called.
