MY CHOSEN GENRE: 
DRAMA

What is ‘drama’? 
 Drama films rely on having realistic characters 
that develop throughout the film through 
emotional themes and relationships. 
 These themes are often taken or inspired from 
real life problems. 
 Therefore, the aim of a drama genre film is to 
'tell an honest story of human struggles'.
Why did I choose 'drama'? 
 Having an achievable genre in terms of location, 
budget, actors, props, genre iconography & more. 
 The fact that drama shows, 'an honest story of 
human struggles', gives a large scope for where I 
would want to film and who to film. 
 Similar to the social-realism genre which is 
suitable for Independent Film Companies 
as the budget can be very small. 
 Therefore, this is great for me as I am just one 
person and will by no means have a large (or any) 
budget.
Are trailers important? 
 Yes, for both audiences and institutions. 
 Audiences: 
- a way of reaching out to the target audience 
- gives them a taste for the film 
- actors/actresses involved are revealed which could make them want to 
see the film more 
 Institutions 
- vital element of promotion 
- potential target audience could grow from the trailer (= more profit) 
- it advertises their company through streaming sites (YouTube, Vimeo, etc) 
- the possibility the trailer will ‘go viral’

What Sub-Genre? 
 ‘Tragedy Drama is a genre wherein the downfall of the character is 
caused by a flaw within the character. While Tragedy Dramas 
sometime put the character in extraordinary circumstances, this 
genre is really about the self-destructive behaviour of the character. 
The flaws of the character come to a head and ultimately result in 
death or other form of degradation.’
