This document outlines referral criteria for patients in hospice care who could benefit most from music therapy services. The criteria include patients experiencing pain, agitation or discomfort; patients and families demonstrating significant emotional responses to illness; patients with limited communication or cognitive abilities; patients with limited social support or interactions; patients seeking to leave a legacy; patients withdrawn from other services; and patients with a significant response to or love of music. Brief case studies are provided for each criterion to illustrate how music therapy has helped patients by reducing symptoms, processing emotions, increasing alertness and interaction, connecting socially, creating legacies, and finding outlets and distractions.
