The remarks of Sony Music Entertainment CEO
Doug Morris in 2011 illustrated an accurate under-
standing of the environment of music sales. Morris,
a globally influential executive and music innovator,
agreed to join Sony Music Entertainment as chief
executive officer effective July 1, 201l. In a time of
great change in the music marketplace, it was abso-
lutely necessary that Sony take active steps to remain
competitive. Morris took the job graciously, but he
placed himself into a business whose margins were
becoming thinner and thinner. With a declining
industry that had been made less lucrative by the
wide availability of substitutes, Morris was forced to
develop a strategy to contend with industry change
and unfavorable competitive forces in 2014.

BMG's 50 percent stake in Sony Music Entertain-

2. The big 4!
• The music industry is dominated by the “big four record labels.” They control
around 70% of the world music industry and around 85% of the us industry.
• The above chart shows the music spending within the past 3 years. The blue
represents 2012. The pink represents 2013 and the green represents 2014. As you
can see there is a slight increase within the streaming industry and the physical has
taken a decrease.
3. Universal music group
• This music company is an American worldwide
corporation and they claims to be the largest
music corporation in the world. Their
headquarters is in California. They make a
profit of 6,552 billion in 2013 and have a total
of 7000 employees. It was first founded in
1934.
4. Sony BMG
• Song BGM music entertainment was a record
company which was a 50-50 joint venture
between the song corporation of America and
Bertelsmann AG. They were founded March 3
2004. The headquaters is in New York.
5. Independent labels
• An independent record label or indie record
label is a record label that operates without
funding of or major record labels likes the
Warner music group. Many bands and musical
acts begin their careers on independent
labels.
6. Warner music group
• Warner music is an American global record
company and the headquarters are situated in
New York. This is company is the largest
American owned music conglomerate
worldwide and is also one of the big 4
recording companies. It has just over 3000
employees and a revenue of $2.87 billion
dollars. Was founded in 1958 and has had
many different owners such as the Kinney
National company and Time Warner.
7. Changes in distribution
• Distribution has changed and this would be because of technology convergence.
There are now new ways to distribute to the public. This could be through ITunes,
Spotify and apple music. People themselves can also distribute via YouTube. This
allows more people to become popular and aware. A prime example would be
Justin Bieber. He is now worth a total of 200 million and has currently took in 80
million in 2015. This shows that anyone can become a music sensation through
the changes in distribution.
8. Changes in marketing
• The market has changed a lot within the past 50 years. This would be
because of technology convergence. You can now do things like viral
advertising which allows artists to advertise their music online to social
media sites. This would allow them to promote their music more and gain
more of an audience. This would increase the sales and that is what the
record label and the artist wants.
• The development of web 2.0 and 3.0 also allows it easier to promote
artists. People can now create music theirselfs and upload it to YouTube.
They may get recognized and may get signed by a record label. Justin
Biebier is a clear example of this. However this may have a negative
impact on record labels. People can now create and distribute music
theirselfs which means that they do not need record labels.
9. How does this relate to my chosen
genre that we are making a video for.
