R&B originated in the 1940s as a term used by record companies to describe African American music that was becoming popular. It was a genre full of jazz-influenced music with strong beats that was marketed towards urban African American audiences. In 1948, R&B became an established genre when RCA Victor began marketing "Blues and Rhythm" music and Louis Jordan dominated the first R&B chart with three of his songs. Over time, R&B expanded its audience but still represents the music made originally by African Americans.
