Course Objectives
Welcome to MUSI200: Music Appreciation! I look forward to
sharing the world of music with you!
After completing this course, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a general knowledge and understanding of
Western music from its beginnings to present
2. Apply musical terminology, concepts and critical listening
skills by focusing on major composers and
styles.
3. Analyze the social, political, and cultural influences on
Western and non-Western music
4. Evaluate different styles of music found around the world
(In the Course Outline below, these are referred to as LO: 1,
LO: 2, LO: 3, and LO: 4.)

Course Delivery Method
This course delivered via distance learning will enable students
to complete academic work in a flexible
manner, completely online. Course materials and access to an
online learning management system will be
made available to each student. Online assignments are due by
Sunday evening of the week as noted and
include Forum questions (accomplished in groups through a
threaded discussion board), quizzes, and
individual assignments (submitted for review by the Faculty
Member). Assigned faculty will support the
students throughout this eight-week course.

Evaluation Procedures
The nature of an online course dictates a significant degree of
independent work. I will provide you with the
resources, experience, and guidance; you assume the
responsibility for managing your time, learning the
material, and completing assignments on time.
It is imperative that you read your Messages every time you log
onto the Internet and the classroom.
Important updates to your assignments, due dates, etc. will be
sent to you via email.
For the purposes of this course, a “week” is defined as the time
period between Monday–Sunday. The first
week begins on the first day of the semester and ends on
11:59pm (ET) the following Sunday.
I have designed this course so that your weekly readings
include:
• E-text readings accompanied by listening examples, which can
be found in Lessons > Required Reading
• Supplemental lecture material, which can be found in Lessons
Grades in this course are based on the following:
1) Class Participation/Discussion: Participation will be
evaluated based on the degree of interaction
you have with me and with fellow students. Participation in the
Forums is worth 25% of your final
grade.
a) You are required to maintain routine contact with me through
the electronic classroom. While
you may want to and can contact me more frequently, the
university requires that you contact
your professor at least weekly during the course of the semester.
If you are submitting the
assignments of the class in a timely manner, then you are
fulfilling this requirement.
b) You are required to participate in classroom Forums on at
least two days during the week.
Respecting your busy schedules, discussion work is
asynchronous, meaning you are not
required to be online at a specific time or place with the
professor and other members of your
course. Instead, you may post your comments in Forums. (You
certainly may choose to interact
synchronously with your classmates or me via a chat room,
however). It is not acceptable to
wait until Sunday (the last day of the online week) to begin
participating in the
discussions. You must participate substantively on at least two
days during the week to
fulfill the Forum requirements.
In addition, classroom discussion work must be posted in the
classroom on the week assigned.
Please keep in mind that the weeks run Monday-Sunday.
Classroom discussions will not be
accepted via email, snail mail, or phone calls. All posted
discussions must be relevant to the
week’s reading. That is, Week 4 requires a discussion on the
readings and assignments for
Week 4. Postings unrelated to the week’s discussion will not be
counted as participation. Please
also note that points for late postings will be automatically
downgraded.
Full participation is signing in weekly and contributing to the
class discussion(s), each week,
with meaningful and valid discussions.
Feedback and grades for Forum participation will be posted in
the Gradebook after the week
has ended.
2) Two short papers: This class requires two papers (750-1000
words). These short, thoughtful papers
are a means for me to see that you are reading, understanding,
assimilating, and synthesizing the
course readings and other materials. This component is worth
25% of your final grade. The due dates
for papers are listed in your course outline, and detailed
information regarding these papers may be
found in Assignments.
3) Weekly Quizzes: Worth 25% of your final grade, there is a
10-question multiple-choice quiz each
week in Tests & Quizzes relating to that week’s reading and
assignments. Each quiz may be taken
twice with the higher grade recorded in the Gradebook. These
quizzes are due by Sunday of each
week.
4) Group Project - Let’s Blab about Jazz Composers: Worth
25% of your final grade. Detailed
information and the due date related to this assignment can be
found in the Assignments section of our
online classroom.
GRADED EVENTS TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS % OF FINAL
GRADE
Class Participation 25 pts. each week (for 8 weeks) 25 %
Two short papers 100 points each 25 %
Weekly Quizzes 100 points each 25 %
Group Project 100 points 25 %
Please see the student handbook to reference the University’s
grading scale.

WRITING EXPECTATIONS
Please see “Requirements for Writing Assignments” for a
detailed explanation of writing requirements. This
information is also hyperlinked in the directions for the two
short papers in Assignments.
CITATION AND REFERENCE STYLE
Assignments completed in a narrative essay or composition
format may follow MLA (Modern Language
Association) guidelines. This is a citation style used in music
disciplines. This course will require students to
use the citation and reference style established by the MLA.
Examples and resources for this citation style are
presented in “Citing Sources,“ which is also is hyperlinked in
the directions for the two short papers in
Assignments.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS
Students are expected to submit classroom assignments by the
posted due date and to complete the course
according to the published class schedule. Late assignments will
be automatically downgraded. Students must
inform the instructor if assignments are going to be late. As
adults, students, and working professionals I
understand you must manage competing demands on your time.
Should you need additional time to complete
an assignment please contact me before the due date so we can
discuss the situation and determine an
acceptable resolution. Routine submission of late assignments is
unacceptable and may result in points
deducted from your final course grade.
UNIVERSITY POLICIES
Please see the Student Handbook to reference all University
policies. In addition to other important policies,
the Student Handbook will cover the:
Drop/Withdrawal Policy
Plagiarism Policy
Extension Process and Policy
Disability Accommodations
NETIQUETTE
Online universities promote the advance of knowledge through
positive and constructive debate--both inside
and outside the classroom. Discussions on the Internet,
however, can occasionally degenerate into needless
insults and “flaming.” Such activity and the loss of good
manners are not acceptable in a university setting--
basic academic rules of good behavior and proper “Netiquette”
must persist. Remember that you are in a place
for the fun and excitement of learning that does not include
descent to personal attacks or student attempts to
stifle the discussion of others.
• Technology Limitations: While you should feel free to explore
the full-range of creative composition
in your formal papers, keep e-mail layouts simple. The Sakai
classroom may not fully support MIME
or HTML encoded messages, which means that bold face,
italics, underlining, and a variety of color-
coding or other visual effects will not translate in your e-mail
messages.
• Humor Note: Despite the best of intentions, jokes and--
especially--satire can easily get lost or taken
seriously. If you feel the need for humor, you may wish to add
“emoticons” to help alert your readers:

ONLINE LIBRARY RESEARCH CENTER & LEARNING
RESOURCES
The Online Library Resource Center is available to enrolled
students and faculty from inside the electronic
campus. This is your starting point for access to online books,
subscription periodicals, and Web resources
that are designed to support your classes and generally not
available through search engines on the open Web.
In addition, the Center provides access to special learning
resources, which the University has contracted to
assist with your studies. Questions can be directed to
[email protected]
• Charles Town Library and Inter Library Loan: The University
maintains a special library with a
limited number of supporting volumes, collection of our
professors’ publication, and services to search
and borrow research books and articles from other libraries.
• Electronic Books: You can use the online library to uncover
and download over 50,000 titles, which
have been scanned and made available in electronic format.
• Electronic Journals: The University provides access to over
12,000 journals, which are available in
electronic form and only through limited subscription services.
• Turnitin.com: Turnitin.com is a tool to improve student
research skills that also detect plagiarism.
Turnitin.com provides resources on developing topics and
assignments that encourage and guide
students in producing papers that are intellectually honest,
original in thought, and clear in expression.
This tool helps ensure a culture of adherence to the University's
standards for intellectual honesty.
Turnitin.com also reviews students' papers for matches with
Internet materials and with thousands of
student papers in its database, and returns an Originality Report
to instructors and/or students.
Request a Library Guide for your course
(http://apus.libguides.com/index.php)
The AMU/APU Library Guides provide access to collections of
trusted sites on the Open Web and
licensed resources on the Deep Web. These are specially
tailored for academic research at APUS:
• Program Portals contain topical and methodological resources
to help launch general research in the
degree program. To locate, search by department name or
navigate by school.
• Course Lib-Guides narrow the focus to relevant resources for
the corresponding course. To locate,
search by class code (e.g., SOCI111) or class name.
If a guide you need isn't available yet, let us know by emailing
the APUS Library: [email protected]

  • 2. Table of Contents Course Scope Spanning the Middle Ages through the twenty-first century, this course offers a thorough introduction to the elements of music, a broad overview of the history of musical styles, including cultural contexts and perspectives. Table of Contents Course Objectives Welcome to MUSI200: Music Appreciation! I look forward to sharing the world of music with you! After completing this course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate a general knowledge and understanding of Western music from its beginnings to present 2. Apply musical terminology, concepts and critical listening skills by focusing on major composers and styles. 3. Analyze the social, political, and cultural influences on Western and non-Western music 4. Evaluate different styles of music found around the world
  • 3. (In the Course Outline below, these are referred to as LO: 1, LO: 2, LO: 3, and LO: 4.) Table of Contents Course Delivery Method This course delivered via distance learning will enable students to complete academic work in a flexible manner, completely online. Course materials and access to an online learning management system will be made available to each student. Online assignments are due by Sunday evening of the week as noted and include Forum questions (accomplished in groups through a threaded discussion board), quizzes, and individual assignments (submitted for review by the Faculty Member). Assigned faculty will support the students throughout this eight-week course. Table of Contents Course Materials REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS: Hansen, Bethanie, David Whitehouse, and Cathy Silverman. Music Appreciation. Charles Town: APUS E- Press, 2012. (The chapters of the course text are embedded in the “Required Reading” sections in Lessons in our Sakai classroom.) Table of Contents Evaluation Procedures The nature of an online course dictates a significant degree of
  • 4. independent work. I will provide you with the resources, experience, and guidance; you assume the responsibility for managing your time, learning the material, and completing assignments on time. It is imperative that you read your Messages every time you log onto the Internet and the classroom. Important updates to your assignments, due dates, etc. will be sent to you via email. For the purposes of this course, a “week” is defined as the time period between Monday–Sunday. The first week begins on the first day of the semester and ends on 11:59pm (ET) the following Sunday. I have designed this course so that your weekly readings include: • E-text readings accompanied by listening examples, which can be found in Lessons > Required Reading • Supplemental lecture material, which can be found in Lessons Grades in this course are based on the following: 1) Class Participation/Discussion: Participation will be evaluated based on the degree of interaction you have with me and with fellow students. Participation in the Forums is worth 25% of your final grade.
  • 5. a) You are required to maintain routine contact with me through the electronic classroom. While you may want to and can contact me more frequently, the university requires that you contact your professor at least weekly during the course of the semester. If you are submitting the assignments of the class in a timely manner, then you are fulfilling this requirement. b) You are required to participate in classroom Forums on at least two days during the week. Respecting your busy schedules, discussion work is asynchronous, meaning you are not required to be online at a specific time or place with the professor and other members of your course. Instead, you may post your comments in Forums. (You certainly may choose to interact synchronously with your classmates or me via a chat room, however). It is not acceptable to wait until Sunday (the last day of the online week) to begin participating in the discussions. You must participate substantively on at least two days during the week to fulfill the Forum requirements. In addition, classroom discussion work must be posted in the classroom on the week assigned. Please keep in mind that the weeks run Monday-Sunday. Classroom discussions will not be accepted via email, snail mail, or phone calls. All posted discussions must be relevant to the week’s reading. That is, Week 4 requires a discussion on the
  • 6. readings and assignments for Week 4. Postings unrelated to the week’s discussion will not be counted as participation. Please also note that points for late postings will be automatically downgraded. Full participation is signing in weekly and contributing to the class discussion(s), each week, with meaningful and valid discussions. Feedback and grades for Forum participation will be posted in the Gradebook after the week has ended. 2) Two short papers: This class requires two papers (750-1000 words). These short, thoughtful papers are a means for me to see that you are reading, understanding, assimilating, and synthesizing the course readings and other materials. This component is worth 25% of your final grade. The due dates for papers are listed in your course outline, and detailed information regarding these papers may be found in Assignments. 3) Weekly Quizzes: Worth 25% of your final grade, there is a 10-question multiple-choice quiz each week in Tests & Quizzes relating to that week’s reading and assignments. Each quiz may be taken twice with the higher grade recorded in the Gradebook. These
  • 7. quizzes are due by Sunday of each week. 4) Group Project - Let’s Blab about Jazz Composers: Worth 25% of your final grade. Detailed information and the due date related to this assignment can be found in the Assignments section of our online classroom. GRADED EVENTS TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS % OF FINAL GRADE Class Participation 25 pts. each week (for 8 weeks) 25 % Two short papers 100 points each 25 % Weekly Quizzes 100 points each 25 % Group Project 100 points 25 % Please see the student handbook to reference the University’s grading scale. This information is also hyperlinked in the directions for the two short papers in Assignments. CITATION AND REFERENCE STYLE Assignments completed in a narrative essay or composition format may follow MLA (Modern Language Association) guidelines. This is a citation style used in music disciplines. This course will require students to use the citation and reference style established by the MLA. Examples and resources for this citation style are presented in “Citing Sources,“ which is also is hyperlinked in the directions for the two short papers in Assignments. LATE ASSIGNMENTS Students are expected to submit classroom assignments by the posted due date and to complete the course according to the published class schedule. Late assignments will be automatically downgraded. Students must inform the instructor if assignments are going to be late. As
  • 17. adults, students, and working professionals I understand you must manage competing demands on your time. Should you need additional time to complete an assignment please contact me before the due date so we can discuss the situation and determine an acceptable resolution. Routine submission of late assignments is unacceptable and may result in points deducted from your final course grade. UNIVERSITY POLICIES Please see the Student Handbook to reference all University policies. In addition to other important policies, the Student Handbook will cover the: Drop/Withdrawal Policy Plagiarism Policy Extension Process and Policy Disability Accommodations NETIQUETTE Online universities promote the advance of knowledge through positive and constructive debate--both inside and outside the classroom. Discussions on the Internet, however, can occasionally degenerate into needless insults and “flaming.” Such activity and the loss of good manners are not acceptable in a university setting-- basic academic rules of good behavior and proper “Netiquette” must persist. Remember that you are in a place for the fun and excitement of learning that does not include descent to personal attacks or student attempts to stifle the discussion of others.
  • 18. • Technology Limitations: While you should feel free to explore the full-range of creative composition in your formal papers, keep e-mail layouts simple. The Sakai classroom may not fully support MIME or HTML encoded messages, which means that bold face, italics, underlining, and a variety of color- coding or other visual effects will not translate in your e-mail messages. • Humor Note: Despite the best of intentions, jokes and-- especially--satire can easily get lost or taken seriously. If you feel the need for humor, you may wish to add “emoticons” to help alert your readers: ;- DISCLAIMER STATEMENT Course content may vary from the outline to meet the needs of this particular group. Table of Contents Academic Services ONLINE LIBRARY RESEARCH CENTER & LEARNING RESOURCES The Online Library Resource Center is available to enrolled students and faculty from inside the electronic campus. This is your starting point for access to online books, subscription periodicals, and Web resources that are designed to support your classes and generally not available through search engines on the open Web.
  • 19. In addition, the Center provides access to special learning resources, which the University has contracted to assist with your studies. Questions can be directed to [email protected] • Charles Town Library and Inter Library Loan: The University maintains a special library with a limited number of supporting volumes, collection of our professors’ publication, and services to search and borrow research books and articles from other libraries. • Electronic Books: You can use the online library to uncover and download over 50,000 titles, which have been scanned and made available in electronic format. • Electronic Journals: The University provides access to over 12,000 journals, which are available in electronic form and only through limited subscription services. • Turnitin.com: Turnitin.com is a tool to improve student research skills that also detect plagiarism. Turnitin.com provides resources on developing topics and assignments that encourage and guide students in producing papers that are intellectually honest, original in thought, and clear in expression. This tool helps ensure a culture of adherence to the University's standards for intellectual honesty. Turnitin.com also reviews students' papers for matches with Internet materials and with thousands of student papers in its database, and returns an Originality Report to instructors and/or students. Request a Library Guide for your course
  • 20. (http://apus.libguides.com/index.php) The AMU/APU Library Guides provide access to collections of trusted sites on the Open Web and licensed resources on the Deep Web. These are specially tailored for academic research at APUS: • Program Portals contain topical and methodological resources to help launch general research in the degree program. To locate, search by department name or navigate by school. • Course Lib-Guides narrow the focus to relevant resources for the corresponding course. To locate, search by class code (e.g., SOCI111) or class name. If a guide you need isn't available yet, let us know by emailing the APUS Library: [email protected] Table of Contents Selected Bibliography A selected bibliography is located in the MUSI200 course guide in the APUS library.
