- The document discusses the importance of documentation and preservation of cultural heritage sites, artifacts, and information as memory that is otherwise at risk of being lost over time. - It notes examples throughout history where destruction of sites like Bamiyan in Afghanistan and damage to monuments during war led to erasure of past memory without proper documentation and preservation. - While digital documentation promises total and eternal preservation, the document argues this is not truly possible as electronic storage devices are also at risk of deterioration and obsolescence over time. Specialized departments, best practices, resources, and education are needed to continually migrate digital information to new formats and systems to delay its vanishing.

Budget cuts are no longer to be considered a merely temporary accident, so we have to face the fact that ours is now a post-affluent society, where vast primadonna-like museal programmes (and architectures) are going to be a thing of the past, and sustainability, as well as vernacular architectures, are the things we should take into focus. This also means downsizing infrastructures and tools. In documentation and communication - of single artefacts, collections, and museum programmes - we can consider the role of humbler (and less expensive) tools. Like social upheaval’ dissemination in the Maghreb and in the Middle East has effectively demonstrated, a smartphone can be a very powerful tool. If we think of the fact that museum professionals are very often already networked, we can easily imagine a new, “lighter” and less expensive process of collections’ documentation, based on already existing know-how. This presentation has been prepared for a meeting organized by ICOM and the City of Bologna Museums Authority, focused on the preservation of virtual memories (19 May 2011). Museums and libraries were established as repositories of memory, initially as rarity-cabinets and archives by rich collectors in the 16th century. These resulted in the museum and library archives as public institutions of the 18th century with a mission to educate their visitors (Dilevko 2004). During the 19th century the past was defined as the product of “intellectual enactment and study” (Benett, 2004, p.2). Today, the use of Virtual Reality (VR) applications in Archaeology and Museology and the ever-increasing development of interactive software and new technological platforms have provided museum and library archives and historical collections with a new space of contact to their users. In other words, Museums, libraries and institutions of memory have been challenged to find new forms of dialogue with their users and have turned to VR technology to entertain and inform their audience.

In times of "lean economy" museums and other cultural heritage related institutions and programmes must come up with a maximum of creativity and strategic thinking to obtain the most from as little as might be available. In this presentation - first shown on 13 November 2011 at the Digital Youth of Central Asia Forum in Dushanbe via video conference on Skype, some possible approaches to the issue are discussed, while hinting at the roots of the problem - way back in the mid Eighties - when public programming failed to keep private sponsors from investing in large, expensive, but prevalently ephemeral projects.

This presentation has been prepared for CMA 2014, the Canadian Museums Association's yearly meeting taking place in Toronto from 7-11 April 2014. It focuses on inclusion of audience as co-curators and co-creators of added value to museums collections, on digital engagement (Jasper Visser & Jim Richardson) and "stepping down" from curators as opinion makers/leaders, to focus towards museums (and museum professionals) as enzymes of under-the-surface-lying creativity in the communities they wish to address, facilitators for new values and new visions to emerge. The presentation, quoting case studies from Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Italy (the Visual Arts Research and Documentation Centre at MACRO Contemporary Art Museum), was discussed on April 10, 2014 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel (Imperial Room).

This presentation has been prepared for the Canadian Museums Association 2013 Conference in Whitehorse, Yukon (Canada), and presented on 30 May 2013. Next to addressing the varied setting of Afghanistan's complex cultural stratigraphy, it describes a few case studies of successful and not-so-successful endeavours in the area, stressing the need of an extreme flexibility in setting up a cooperation between museum professionals. This flexibility shoul not be just confined to the tools we choose, but should also englobe our values, strategies, and priorities. In this way, we'll be able to break the dichotomy of "giving a man a fish and feeding him for a day" or "teaching a man to fish and feed him for a life": going out to fish together for a while, each one will come back enriched from the interaction.

Libraries, museums and archives – so-called memory institutions – are undergoing intense technological transformations in the way they catalog, preserve and publish cultural heritage information. The timeline, scope, and outcome of this technological advancement seem to be very different in these fields, due to the different mission and structure of these institutions. However, some of the underlying tools, specific goals, methodologies and data models seem to be shared among most of the cultural institutions who are invested in technological advancement. In this informal, open discussion and Q/A among the panelists and with the audience, the participants will engage in an exchange of use cases in their own specific fields, trying to find a common ground where cultural heritage institutions can collaborate to establish standards that are valid for all cultural expressions.

Chercher à modéliser la diversité des ressources culturelles et des histoires collectives qui leurs sont associées, et cela sous différents points de vue, demeure un défi de taille. En dépit d’un investissement considérable, l’usage de la technologie pour une modélisation du patrimoine culturel en est resté à un stade expérimental et parcellaire. Cette communication cherche à établir en quoi la modélisation de la connaissance du «monde réel » contribue à dresser une image fidèle et attrayante du patrimoine culturel, à l’intérieur et au-delà des frontières nationales.

Reconsidering tourismophobia in cinematic tourism mobilities

The presentation focuses on the ways localities, nation-states and national or international activists (as the former’s spokespersons) respond to excessive cinematic touristification in reactionary or defensive ways. The cases upon which I draw are mostly episodic, but crucial for the current global climate of hostility against forms of strengerhood. Because established analytical frames on social movements do not assist in the study of most such episodic expressions of discontent, a new analytical model is devised to tease out their affective significance in the grand scheme of globalisation.

Some critics may have you believe that computer game studies lack theoretical rigor, that games cannot afford meaningful experiences. I agree with them, sometimes, but I also believe that a richer understanding of computer games is possible, and that this understanding can shed some light on related issues in the wider field of Digital Humanities. My main area of research has been designing and evaluating how contextually appropriate interaction can aid the understanding of cultures distant in time, space, and in understanding to our own. This field is sometimes called Virtual Heritage. In Virtual Heritage, tools of choice are typically virtual reality environments, and the projects are very large in scale, complexity, and cost, while my projects are often prototypes and experimental designs. I have many challenges, for example, morphing technological constraints into cultural affordances, and avoiding possible confusion between artistic artifice and historical accuracy, all the while evaluating intangible concepts in a systematic way without disturbing the participants’ sense of immersion. To help me judge the success or failure of these projects I have shaped some working definitions of games, culture, cultural understanding, cultural inhabitation, and place. However, these concepts and definitions are not enough. I also have to now tackle the issues of simulated violence, artificial “other” people, the temptation of entertainment masquerading as education, and the difficulties inherent in virtually evoking a sense of ritual. My lecture, then, is a discussion into how game-based learning, and the study of culture, heritage and history, might meaningfully intersect.

This presentation has been prepared for the Muzeum @ Digit Conference 2016 at the Hungarian National Museum (Budapest, 22-23 November 2016). It describes an open source solution - as are those proposed and fostered by OSACA, the Open Source Alliance of Central Asia, founded in Kabul in October 2011 - to map and manage a knowledge base related to both governmental mining prospects and cultural heritage protection. Though based on case studies located in Afghanistan, this solution would be well suited for being applied in many different contexts, too.

Learning From Mistakes describes a new strategic approach to post disaster cultural heritage crisis management, focusing on the experience drawn from the two earthquakes that hit Italy in 2009 and 2012. Crowdsourcing, FOSS, and local broadcasting points are suggested for sharing knowledge and streamlining intervention in a more effective way. First presented in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, at ROSCCA 2013 (25-29 March 2013) in a slightly differing version, this presentation was shown at MuseumNext 2013 in Amsterdam (NL) on 13 May 2013.

The Legacy of a Humanistic Tradition in Roberto Rossellini’s Films and Research Work. Pictures taken from the art book-catalogue presented at the exhibition shown at the Museo di Roma in Trastevere (Rome, IT), 10 February – 1 April 2007. The exhibition marked the final celebrations for Roberto Rossellini’s centenary, and underlined some of the lesser known aspects of the Italian film director’s research work and filmography. The exhibition was structured in multiple sections. One of these showed a selection of pictures shot by Italian movie stills photographer Gianni Assenza. This presentation is the revised English version of a previous one, prepared by the same author for CRDAV on July 12, 2010. Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg, The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation. This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability. Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots. The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee. • The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act. • The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X. • The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
