Mummies are dead pharaohs that were preserved through mummification to protect their bodies for the afterlife. They were wrapped tightly in linen bandages and placed in ornately painted wooden coffins, which were then buried in stone tombs along with canopic jars containing organs and amulets for protection. Animals like cats, dogs and cows were also sometimes mummified and received similar treatment.
