A MULTICULTURAL SOCIETY is a society where different races,
cultures and traditions live side by side with a mutual respect.
MULTICULTURALISM is important for a country, because each society
consists of people from different ethnic backgrounds, cultures and
religions living and working together – we talk about a CULTURAL
DIVERSITY.
We are more alike than different!
We celebrate diversity!
3.
Ethnic minorities are usually blamed for economic or social problems.
When people learn about different ways of life, it helps to BREAK DOWN
BARRIERS between ethnic groups which are caused by Ignorance (People
have a tendency of being suspicious of cultures they do not understand).
Cultural differences can divide a society, lead to prejudice and
discrimination between minorities.
Living with different culture brings a better understanding of other cultures,
enrich our lives and helps to encourage tolerance.
Riots/Rebellions are usually possible in multicultural societies.
Racism is sometimes a problem.
Tolerance and open-mindness.

Multicultural education is very important for all of us, in order to
understand that diversity can make union. Multicultural education
prepares children for living in a multicultural society; it also creates
equal education opportunities for students from different racial, ethnic
and cultural groups.
Multicultural education helps all students to acquire the knowledge,
attitudes and skills needed to function effectively in a modern society.

Of all the many different nationalities and ethnic groups which have gone into the making
of America, some have been quickly assimilated/swallowed. They have largely lost or
intentionally given up many of their specific markers which make them much different from
their neighbors. This process of assimilation or `Americanization` has long characterized the
immigrant/emigrant experience in American history. It actually means becoming part of the
`melting pot`, part of a newly formed substance in which you cannot recognize the original
ingredients.
Other Americans have, while becoming American in other way, maintained much of their
ethnic identities. In this sense, US society/history has been likened to a `salad bowl`.
Perhaps a better metaphor for American society than either `the melting pot` or the
`salad bowl` would be that of a `pizza` (which has become, by the way, the single most
popular/tasty food in America). The different ingredients are often apparent and each give
the whole its own particular taste and flavor, yet all are fused together into something larger.

The UK is most definitely multicultural, and it has always been. For a start, it’s made up of four different …1… . England,
Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are all different countries with different …2…, customs, music and languages.
When the Romans, Vikings, and Normans invaded the UK, they brought their cultures and languages with them and many
English words have French, German, or Scandinavian …3… . Furthermore, because of its proximity to …4…, the UK has a long
history of trade with other European nations and that inevitably has meant the free movement of people, including marriages.
The British royal …5… is very multicultural, and that’s even before Megan Markle. So many of their former Kings and
Queens have come from European royal families. For example, Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon, was ……6……..
Britain has even been ruled by European monarchs. William I was Norman, and William III (also known as William of Orange)
was Dutch.
The UK colonial past also explains our multiculturalism. During the British …7…, many Britons went to live and work in
colonies around the world and many colonial subjects came to Britain. Even today, former territories and colonies have strong
ties to Britain and people continue to migrate. Interestingly, the 2011 census revealed that the overall percentage of Brits who
identify as white and Christian is declining. A separate study shows that over 300 languages are spoken in the UK.
However, this …8… is not evenly spread across the UK. Big cities like London, Manchester, and Birmingham are extremely
multicultural, but smaller towns and villages are far less so. This is because immigrants have historically flocked to the larger
cities in search of work.
Different cities in the UK also have different proportions of various ethnic groups depending on their individual histories.
For example, Liverpool has an old Black community because Liverpool was once linked to the trans-Atlantic …9… trade.
Liverpool is also home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe because of the city’s strong trading ties with Shanghai dating
back to the 1890s.
In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in nationalistic sentiment in the UK because some Britons believe that
the UK should not be multicultural. But many more Britons believe that their history shows us they have always been
multicultural and that there are many economic and social …10… of being a multicultural nation.

Earlier this month, our 5th grade students created
Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired art:
1. The dove at the center is a sign for peace and
unity. Each student selected a color to represent
themselves and added 5-7 fingerprints each to
the dove. It was a collaborative art centerpiece
to show the unity of the classroom and the idea
of how amazing an end product can look when
we each contribute to it.

This activity is an easy way to start
building a positive view of race and
diversity. We simply used a brown
egg, a white egg and a few quail eggs
as visual aids to show that everyone
is special in their own way but deep
down inside we are all similar.
