My talk would be around some principles and learning in the army that can be used in the IT corporate world in building organizations to deal with dynamic market changes in short doing and living agile. Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City is one of the nation’s largest and most respected hospitals best known for its excellent healthcare services, both locally and internationally. The hospital has been consistently ranked among the best hospitals in the country over the past decade due to its commitment to continuous improvement, adoption of new technologies, and investment in healthcare research (Venditto, 2017). Thus, change management is at the core of the hospital's approach to healthcare delivery, ensuring the facility is up-to-date with the changes taking place in the industry. Leaders at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York exhibited a wide range of leadership skills in ensuring the process was managed properly. Some of the top leaders in the organization that was involved in the change management process include the Chief Executive Officer, the Operations Manager, the Project Manager, and the Business Analyst. Each of these team leaders plays a critical role in the implementation process, which required them to bring on boards crucial leadership skills that would ensure the project succeeds.
For example, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the hospital provided skills like emotional stability and charisma. The CEO showcased the trait of emotional stability in the process, particularly when it came to managing conflicts. Emotional stability was instrumental in helping the leaders maintain a cohesive team despite the differences of opinion. In addition, the CEO also had a lot of charisma, which played a significant role in arousing strong emotions within the team. His charismatic leadership was crucial in keeping the team together and determined to achieve the main objectives of the change process.
The Operations Manager was also crucial to the team as he was in charge of ensuring the change process did not have a negative impact on the ongoing processes at the hospital. To play this role, he brought on different board skills including effective communication and integrity. Integrity was the main fabric holding the team together. Since every member of the team was a highly experienced professional in their respective specialties, they needed to act professionally and behave in a respectful manner within the team (Mumford, 2012). These ensured conflicts were managed properly throughout the team’s deliberations. Effective communication was key in the team (Mumford, 2012). The team leaders encouraged each member to air their views and opinions on each step of the process. This helped to create understanding, reduce unnecessary tensions, and build trust among the team me.

My current organization’s leadership consists of a Principal, six Assistant Principals, a Student Activities Coordinator, and a School Improvement Specialist. This team is known as our Administration Team. Everything and all final decisions are up to the Principal before they are passed on to the Principal’s supervisor, which is the Director of High Schools and then the overall Superintendent of the school district. Our Principal is a democratic, ethical leader who relies on the Administration team for support, ideas, and structure. A democratic leader, as discussed in our text, is a leader that provides rewards when necessary and sticks to the least discipline of the employees (Argosy, 2018). This allows leadership to focus on the objectives while the district deals with any disciplinary action against any employee. The leadership of this organization is grounded in ethical decisions and remembering that education and safety are most important.
When thinking of effective change leadership in my organization, the two features that allow the organization to progress through changes and lead effectively through change are communication and collaboration. As effective leaders of change focus on what the change is and why it is important, communication is imperative because leaders must continuously communicate with all individuals involved to connect everyone to the purpose and urgency for the change (Smith, 2008). The other important feature of effective change leadership is collaboration. School districts like the one I work with are built on collaboration. Many people work together daily to make things happen for the greater vision of the organization. Change leadership or change, in general, cannot happen without effective collaboration in the capacity of every wanting the same outcome to be positive and beneficial (Anderson & Anderson, 2010).
Effective change leadership also requires ethics to play a huge role. Ethical decisions by leadership are crucial in and through change. Imagine a leader who has personal interests in personal gain. This will cause all decisions to be bias and unethical. An effective leader must follow the ethics of the organization and have the interest of the organization in mind always. A dishonest and untrustworthy leader cannot lead effective change leadership. Thinking positively, I recommend that my organization continually stand on the ethical principles of alignment and integrity.
