Composting turns yard and food waste into a valuable soil amendment called compost. Compost is dark, crumbly, and earthy-smelling, and helps soil retain moisture, suppress plant diseases and pests, and provides nutrients to support plant growth. The Northeast Recycling Council provides information to help communities and businesses establish composting programs that turn waste into a resouce.
