Why Green Ports matter?
Green Ports initiatives contribute to improve air quality in cities and ports, reduce air
pollutants and noise, and reduce CO2

Effects of air pollution include breathing and respiratory systems, damage to lung tissue, cancer,

Green Ports is a set of measures to improve Port’s and maritime transport impact on
environment.

• The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is
the specialized agency of the United Nations
responsible for the safety of navigation and
prevention of marine pollution by vessels.
• The MARPOL Convention (Annex VI) lays down
rules on air pollution caused by ships.
• MARPOL applies ECA zones stricter rules on
emission limits.
• EU seeks to coordinate the position of IMO member
countries to adopt measures to reduce ship
emissions.
• According to European Directive from 2015, sulphur
emission limit to 0.1% in navigation and port.

retrofitting of a ship to accommodate the LNG
