Genre
Crime-Thriller
Our movie is going to be a
crime-thriller based film. We looked
at several films that are that genre,
and decided on three films that
would influence our movie the
most.
A thriller is a film that focuses
on an exciting and suspenseful
event, usually revolving around a
mystery. In a crime-thriller, this
mystery is usually a felony, such as
murder.
Films Studied
 Taken (2009), directed by Pierre Morel
 The Silence of the Lambs (1991), directed by
Jonathan Demme
 A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014), directed by
Scott Frank
Taken
The film opens with a home video. The music here is a soft piano
which portrays happy times. Then, the film cuts to the protagonist
awakening. The scene shows a dark room which contributes to the
mystery of the whole film. Throughout the title cards, the words fade-
and slide-in. At the end of the two minuets the protagonist proceeds
to get into a car and drive to some sort of pawn shop looking for a
karaoke machine.
The Silence of the Lambs
The film opens up with a shot of the woods and a foggy mountain
in the background. The names started to fade in and fade out. The text
was black on white which made them really pop to the viewer. The
music sounded like violins, giving it a sort of mysterious and sad vibe. It
then continues on to show a young female doing some sort of
endurance work out by running/climbing the mountain. The first two
minutes then finish with the female continuing her run and the names
slowly stop fading in.
A Walk Among the Tombstones
The opening of “A Walk Among the Tombstones” begins with a
black screen and police radio activity in the background. Then, dialog
begins. The black fades to a shot of a shadowed face of a grown man
in a car talking to the passenger about some sort of operation. The
passenger then exits the car and goes into the bar and sits down at a
booth. As the first two minutes comes to an end, the bar tender places
two shots of alcohol and one cup of coffee in front of the man. Police
radio activity continued through the entirety of the scene.
Conclusion
All films (eve those of the same genre) are very different. Some start
out very active, such as A Walk Among the Tombstones, with gunfire,
whilst others like The Silence of the Lambs, which stated out very
peacefully with a woman on a jog.
