Volcanic mountains are formed when magma erupts from the Earth's crust and hardens into a mountain shape. Dome mountains form when magma pushes up from below the crust but cannot break through, instead warping the crust into a dome shape under high pressure. Fault-block mountains are created when a crack in the Earth's crust closes suddenly, raising one side into a mountain with a steep front and sloping back.
